Travel to UK for F-class og Fullbore shooting.

#1 Post by M67 »

Hi,

New to the forum, but an eager rifle shooter of most diciplines - too busy at everything to be good at anything... Norwegian. Norwegian F-class and LR_BR is quite small, and the level of competition is not very high, but we shoot. No ranges >300m, so the longer distances are shot in various field locations, but generally no access to regular training on round targets (we have steel gongs mostly)
Highpower or fullbore though, is large here, but that happens at 200m - period. Save for "feltskyting" which is UKD and up to 600m, hit or miss.

Anyway, been to the UK a few times with a rifle, hunted roe deer i Scotland. Seen that there are multiple long range shooting ranges in the UK, and competitions.

I more or less set my mind on travelling to do some shooting. Whether F-Class, TR, Fullbore.. matters not much, though my results might be less catastropic in F-class then in fullbore.

So i look for a suitable arrangement, not neccesarily an comp., maybe a class or a course of some sort, as long as it involves a lot of shooting, long range, and that something can be learnt.

- Where should i go? (I know getting into Edinburgh with rifle is smooth, but people tell horror stories about Heathrow)
- When?
- How do i obtain a V-FAC for practice or competition shooting
- How much ammunition can i bring (on the hunting V-FAC we can only bring 50 rounds..)
- what should i shoot?

Welcome to the forum, I am great fan of Jagtfeltskydning in DK and we have our own Sporting Class over here which is for lightweight sporting rifles.

You should be OK to fly into Heathrow and it means a lot less travel to Bisley, there is a good explanation here for the visitors FAC

http://basc.org.uk/firearms/visiting-the-uk-to-shoot/

Ammunition usage is down to how long you are here for and what you intend to shoot, Bisley has issue Ruag in .308 which although aimed at TR is a fine round out to 1000 yards and if you are here for a reasonable amount of time you could always source the powder and primers here and load in the evenings.

If you are looking for a full weekend of long-range shooting (F Class) then maybe the GB F Class League shoots would suit you.

The shoots are held monthly throughout the year - excluding winter - at three venues - Bisley (close to Heathrow Airport), Diggle, (close to Manchester Airport) and Blair Atholl in Scotland.

A typical weekend involves two days of shooting plus practice on the Friday. Typically, you will fire 120 plus rounds over the three days. Quite a few overseas shooters compete.

Check out the website www.gbfclass.co.uk for dates and venues. Around 70 shooters will compete on a typical weekend at 800 to 1000 yards.

If you want something a bit less intense, have a look at the Diggle website www.diggleranges.com - check out the competition calendar - we shoot F Class every two weeks at all distances from 300 to 1000 yards. We are about 40 mins drive from Manchester Airport.

Thanks for the replies. Very interesting that one can buy that kind of quality ammo on site. Might make things easier. Is this the ammo, supplied at Bisley http://www.nra.org.uk/common/files/news/09/ammo09.pdf ?
I understand one need a "sponsor" to the application for the V-FAC, is this routine business at Bisley, or how to find a sponsor?
Do anyone know how much ammo one can bring in to the GB? And also, can that particular RWS/Sierra155 be bought elsewhere? Or i should perhaps load some 155gr SMK to that velocity and do alittle shooting

I have shot quite a few matches, big ones also, so i think i can handle intense, but then, intense here may not be intense there. we may have 1000 participants at a match, but still one competitior only fire one session of 35 shots, and possibly the 10 shot finale round. What is the shooting sceme for such matches? Everyone shoots every day? How many rounds?

M67 - GBFCA League matches are run over a weekend with practice on Friday and competition on Saturday and Sunday. Typically, there will be three matches shot per day with about 20 rounds per match. Depending on the venue/range, anything from 14 to 60 shooters could be shooting 'shoulder to shoulder'.
