Oh I don't know, I'm sure with enough nappy changes you'd do okay tongueout

Seriously though, this is a really good idea here and kudos to the guy. But from experience with Harris bipods on a bench they are more prone to muzzle flip and recoil because they are rigid. I found that being able to lean more into the versa pod they go with the flow of the recoil a lot better. Below is a photo of a versa pod on one of my rifles, take a look and you will see what I mean.

As the shot is fired the recoil comes back instead of flipping up as it does with the Harris bipod. Hey Dougan, this is just some input is all, as you say ultimately it's up to your Dad but I believe you'll find that on the bench with a Harris he will be having to move the rifle and looking for his target after every shot is all.

I agree with you on the Harris bipod thing they definitely shift position with recoil you have to move the rifle back on track after each shot. This idea was just a simple solution to fitting a bipod to a No4 for a bit of a play and it worked. The question is can you do the same with the SMLE I don't know but I am going to have a go. I don't have any experience with a versa pod but it might be possible Ill have a look out of curiosity but for now if I can get the SMLE project to work Ill be happy.
Iv replaced the leather spacer with what I think is a much better solution the bipod is much more rigid and it can still be fitted or removed in ten minutes.

Alpha, I believe it would work just fine with a Versa because they both attach to the sling swivel stud. I can't see why this idea shouldn't also work on the SMLE as well, might have to make minor adjustments to the stud itself but yeah I think it would work just fine.

RE SMLE
this is just an idea as i don't have access to a either type of bipod but really like the bipod idea, could you not make an attachment to fit over the bayonet mount on the SMLE. http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/6 ... L1500_.jpg
Another idea using the a picatinny mount, put a spacer in the band ,
drill out the middle of the rail to fit over the band and spacer flush with the wood
,drill and tap the rail from the side to accept a longer bolt/screw to go through the rail from one side through the band and spacer and lock into the other side of the rail.
it would look similar to the leather leather piece in your photos but be a rail. to stop any marking of the wood a leather/rubber pad could be put between the rail and wood

Interesting. I think both of those adaptors are designed to attach to a scope rail. My method was just a cheap and cheerful way to mount a bipod for a bit of a plink. The bonus is it cost nothing. To use any of the adaptors pictured first off you have to buy the adaptor wait for it to arrive and hope they do the job.

I have had a look at the versa pod fitting and yes it might work or some thing similar but then again I would have to buy a adaptor to find out. I might give it a go. We will see. But I am still working on my original method at present. All interesting stuff though. tesnews

Cheap is good, cheaper is better!
I don't have access to anything other than hand tools, but just like to throw ideas about.
I know the first one is for a scope rail, thats led me to the picatinny idea . The versa pod one i just stumbled upon looking for bayonet mounts

I like cheap especially if it works. I had a measure up of my mates SMLE at the range today its not to different from the No4 swivel and wood.
We will see.

That adapter in the photo above is for the AR15 bayonet mount, it will not fit the No1 MkIII mount. I think that the system you are working on now is and will be a lot better. Anyways good luck with your quest, it's a great idea and I hope it works.
