NRA Survey on Handloading

Not having been a recipient of the survey, being inquisitive about its content and the links to said survey only displaying the 'thank you for taking part' page, I logged onto the Servile Monkey website hoping to find it-no luck. I was requested to answer a never ending stream of marketing questions before it would allow me to participate in anything. The monkey then did some grinding before coming back with "there are no surveys in our database that match your profile"
Bloody waste of time.

Would it not have made sense to ask shooters to help with the creation of this survey?

The NRA has access to many shooters on a daily basis...range office, "Sir/Madam, would you mind jotting down what you think should be part of Question 7 of this soon to be published survey"?

Or ask here or any of the other shooting forums in the UK?

I agree it was a very poorly thought out survey - Something like a youngster might put together for a project at school.

There was a question something like "How many incidents/faults have you seen with hand loaded ammunition" Mark 0, 1-5, 5-10, 10-15.

There was no way of qualifying the information given. I marked 1-5 but then, how many rounds and what time scale does that cover?

In the pistol shooting days I might well have loaded 2-500 a week and yes, there was the odd wally who inserted a primer back to front or missed a powder charge when using a progressive press and ended up with a bullet stuck in the barrel - no real harm done as the next round won't have been cycled. This was a different sort of reloading when compared with loading say 50 rounds for an F-Class match.

In hind sight I wish I hadn't have filled it in now.

I agree that it was very poor....most of the questions assumed a single answer when there were usually 2 or 3...IE Why do I reload?

its because its more accurate AND cheaper (after a while) AND I can get reliability of supply AND (in some cases) there is no factory ammo even if you wanted it (Wildcats / obsoletes etc)

No reliable conclusions will be gleaned and therefore no well thought out plans of action are likely.

A better course of action would be to get a properly representative (and knowledgable) focus group into a room ...pose what the apparent issues are and thrash out a practical response to whatever and to whoever the NRA feels compelled to respond.

Agreed, it was a god awful survey with very useless answers. They will need to re-do that to get anything useful, if they actually *want* anything useful. Smells of politics but don't know if good or bad.

Having just read the whole thread, I won't bother filling in the survey - it's disappointing that the first approach to what is going to be an inevitability (some sort of certification) has been poor.

On the bright side...the stats for us 'amateur' loader-shooters (when looked at properly) are very safe compared to many other sports...if a quick course/certification is all it takes to appease the MOD then why not...?

As far as I am aware there is not a single accredited reloading course available in the UK. There are no standards that have to be adhered to only the perceived best practice of those that are running them.
The Club/Association that I am a member/instructor of is possibly going to be ISO 9000 accredited for its reloading courses. It will probably be the only one in the UK.
There are lots of people out there teaching reloading, the vast majority I suspect are doing based on their own trial and error principles and probably carry no insurance for their instruction/courses.
The association that I belong to is well covered by insurance to cover reloading courses.
