Open Days

Full-borers,

Now that the NRA have decided in their infinite wisdom to stop running the big open days, what alternatives are available out there?

I ask because one of my colleagues at work (a Finnish guy who grew up in a family which was part of a moose hunting syndicate) would really like to take his son to a shooting open day, ideally one with historic arms e.g. Moisin-Nagant, Lee Enfield etc... but with the demise of the NRA open days I don't know where to direct him. Does anyone have any suggestions?

If he is in the "London Area" the HPRPC runs an open day every 1st sunday of the month in Richmond.

A lot on offer : 22lr, gallery rifle, air pistol/rifle, black powder revolver, archery... etc... The biggest calibre he will be able to shoot there is 38 but once a member he will be able to shoot at our monthly full-bore days. I usually shoot my Finnish M39 there, he would be welcome to have a go.

D'oh. Thanks for spotting the obvious omission Blackstuff. He's based in Surrey not a million miles from Bisley, but can travel to London no problems.

Quick question, how does any club (apart from the NRA) hold open days?

I'd like to hold open days at my local .22 club, but have so far drawn a blank when searching through the guidance and legislation.

Any Home Office approved club can hold a max of 12 open days in a year.. contact Your local firearms license dept and they can advise of the requirements

Again not being awkward, but I'm pretty sure clubs (apart from the NRA) can only hold Guest Days:

"the club does not have more than 12 guest days a year. Guest members must be either members of a recognised outside organisation or people who are known personally to at least one full member of the club;"

My .22 club currently has the Scouts shooting a couple of times a year, as a 'recognised outside organisation', but that doesn't really help boost membership like an open day would: hence my interest in how other clubs seem to organise 'open days'. I cannot find the appropriate framework for a club to hold an open day, which I can take to my club secretary to propose the idea.

?? How does that and this not answer your question? Just speak with your FLD and they will tell you what you need to do paper work wise. AFAIK its just a matter of getting the guests to sign a declaration that they're not prohibited from possessing firearms/ammunition and then thats given to the police. As long as the guest is being supervised by/knows a full member thats all that needs to happen

Tiff is right, from the rules/links, clubs can run guest days but NOT open days, big difference in the HO rules it states must be known to a member OR from a recognised group ie scouts.

So anyone know the answer about 'open' days.

Ah right, i didn't differeniate between the two. I've never heard of a private club running an 'open' day so it would be interesting to see if someone has actually managed it
