Barrel length vs powder weight

#1 Post by simong »

Evening peeps,

Gotta question.....

I've just had my 308 re-barreled and so need to start from scratch on load development.
The original barrel was 24" and the new barrel is 28".
The question is that on Hogdons reloading chart they are using a 24" barrel, will the additional 4" make any difference as to my "starting load" /

I have been told that extra length will add a few FPS and can understand why, but I have no idea if this will alter pressures etc....

Thanks in advance and I promise I won't spend any more EU grants this week !

Barrel characteristics aside (tighter or looser bore plus reamer offering longer or shorter throating etc) .....you should not need to worry about pressure differences.

You should benefit from more FPS as you note.

No, while the extra 4" of barrel length may give you a bit more velocity than what's quoted in the loading manual, it will not change pressure tot he extent that you need to change your starting loads from what is listed in the manual.
