Re: best calibre
Getting back to an ACTUAL good calibre though - 6.5x55, or one of the modern (shorter) incarnations, such as the .260 Rem (a .308 case, necked down to take a 6.5 bullet, so available in Short Action receiver rifles)
Also look at 30-06.
A much ignored round these days; can be downloaded & used with 110gr bullets, then you have a wide choice of weights up to 220gr.
You also have a lot of options with .30-cal lead bullets at the lower weights for gallery type use, then several decent lead bullets for up to 500m or so ranges for paper punching

Re: best calibre
303 has served me well as a target round out to 1000 yrds and continues to be my Red Deer calibre of choice.
For Roe the 6mm Musgrave is my choice and will also do for red if you want a lighter round, it has .243" ballistics.
For foxes, vermin and a very accurate target cartridge in the 22 centre fire calibres then the 222 is hard to beat, again my calibre of choice.

Salmond is on record as having said he can see no reason why individuals should be allowed to own firearms.

...in other words, you live in Scotland, have an active vote next week, but yet you are TOTALLY unaware of the SNP stance on gun ownership?
clapclap
Did you see the thread I posted on the AirWeapon consultation submissions required?
HOW the f*** has your club secretary NOT been all over the SNP stance, both for airguns AND firearms in general?
ANY member of ANY Scottish gun club that votes yes should be booted out instantly...
Re: best calibre
To be fair i do not get to club nights much.i was aware of the whole air rifle farce but not the above info.well i was unsure before of my vote but no longer.also thanks for the calibre info info

I have it in writing, from Salmond himself, that a completely gun free Scotland is his goal. And he wrote that in 1996 during the debate on the handgun ban. I haven't seen nor heard anything else that indicates Salmonds or the SNPs position has changed.
In 1978 I was told by my grand dad that the secret to rifle accuracy is, a quality bullet, fired down a quality barrel..... How has that changed?
