Notification of ammunition purchase?

All,

Was reading through my FAC at the club on Friday and noticed this rather worrying text on the back page;

"Notes:

A If you

(i) transfer firearms and/or ammunition to any other person, including lending, selling, hiring it or making a gift of it; or

(ii) purchase or acquire firearms and/or ammuntion; or

(iii) deactivate a firearm or have it deactivated; or

(iv) destroy/lose/have stolen etc

you must notify the chief officer of police who issued this certificate...."

Now, what concerns me slightly is the "and/or ammunition" parts of i) and ii). Not come across this before, and this is a new style certificate. Club member under avon and somerset with a new style cert does not have the "and/or ammunition" parts.

Before I ask the FEO (and this governs how I approach it really);

a) does anyone else have this need to notifiy of ammunition purchase

and

b) is there any basis for it?

It's a known mistake in the notes that's been discussed at length since the new forms came out last year.

Short answer is no, you don't have to inform them.

What are the rules for loading one's own ammunition? I know the total number of completed rounds must not exceed my "Hold" allowance, but won't it look odd at renewal if the last entry on the ammo purchase section of my FAC was a couple of years ago? Does homeloaded ammo need to be written onto the FAC?

No. There are some forces insisting on this, but, you can't write on your own certificate, except for signing. There is nothing that I've seen so far in the 2013 guidance either. Some are keeping separate records for their loading, some the receipts of components. Me, I'm keeping all of my used primers in an empty pasta sauce jar!

I hand load (almost exclusively) and collect.

My FEO has told me that the collecting bit is a blanket cover to hold/purchase/ live whatever is covered.

It does not need to go on my FAC I just need to stay within my allocation and not fire anything obtained for collecton.

IF I entered everything I loaded/was given mu FAC woul dnow look like a Belfast toilet wall!!

I wrote on my own cert when I converted my S2 Benelli to S1, and Kent were happy with it. I know of a number of forces who are also happy for you to do this yourself. (Always best to check with your local firearms team if you want to do this though!) There are some, however which are not. I couldn't find anything in any of the guidance about not being allowed to write on your own cert...I have certainly heard that from a few people, but not been able to confirm it from the guidance..?

I was told to write in any ammo I reload onto my cert by our FEO too..I personally don't care if I write it on, or keep a separate log of rounds loaded. Makes sense to write it on the cert in my mind.. also adds weight if you want to up your allowance at any point too...

I am licensed to hold live ."god knows what mm" (very small) to 19.2mm ball/expanding/AP. 550 of each.

I dont hold live, I do get "given" stuff regularly which is rendered inert where possible, or might be destroyed or refused if it is sus or cannot be killed off safely.

I need to know where it came from to be fair.

I recently got given some ammo I had been after for a while...75 rounds of it, a clip of which I gave to my FEO....and I still have an FAC

There is a ton of the stuff out there, and as one RFD put it, better inert in your hands than in a vice with a kit and a hammer

Its not a massive or extremely important collection, but it does me.
