What wads for Lee 1oz 12g slug

#1 Post by Primer »

Just wondering what wads people are using if they are loading their own 12g slug using the Lee 1oz slug?

I make my own and was using the Winchester WAA12SL and they were perfect but not been able to get any since last July and almost run out, I did try an alternative which was B & P Z-24 but the wad sidewall was thicker and makes for a very tight fit in the case, I've just brought some Winchester WAA12 from Saddler as Winchesters website showed these should be the same dimensions apart from slightly shorter compression spring but on trying them today the sidewalls are much thicker and too tight for the case without creating a bulge, the only way for a reasonable fit was to cut 2 of the wad petals off, I will make a few trial rounds up to test on Thursday but at the moment it looks like £56 down the drain on the WAA12 as worried about the increased pressure these wads will cause if forced into the cases as they are, or alternatively I may look at trying a 7/8oz Lee slug but not sure it will give enough recoil in my Benelli M2 for a smooth cycle, anyone got any 7/8oz slug I can try?.

Claybuster CB-1100-12 is a direct replacement for waa12SL, which actually haven't been made for a while. I went over to the Claybuster wad with my slug load and apart from the colour, they are an exact match.
In 1978 I was told by my grand dad that the secret to rifle accuracy is, a quality bullet, fired down a quality barrel..... How has that changed?

Where are you getting your Claybusters from as I had a few samples sent me by Clay and Game before Xmas but then when I called them to order some they were soldout and have been since then and on talking to them last week they don't think they will be getting anymore.

The Winchesters still appear to be available stateside from a few sources when I googled them the other day but add in shipping and taxes and it makes them way too expensive.

Four of us got together and ordered 5K from Midway UK. Having a look now, the price has gone up a little to 20 quid for 500. With shipping and taxes, using Midway UK may be you cheapest option. Who ever thought you'd get that in the same sentence?!!

Is there nothing on the Siarm site that would do the job?

http://www.siarm.com/index.php?cPath=2_ ... cd55daafcc

I use their 10 Stopper slugs so no wad needed, €27.50 per 100

I have looked at them as I get my cases and other bits from them but they could almost do with selling sample packs with say 5 of each wad in so you could order up loads of different ones before you take the plunge on a big order.

I had not really looked at the ready made slugs as using them would put the price of my reloads up to almost the same as factory S & B slug as I currently get my lead for free from the range but I suppose I ought to counter in the cost of my time and gas to smelt the lead and mould it to see whether in the long run its actually worth the hassle of making them myself.

I have been waiting for a group buy to come up on fourislands (was supposed to be by end of April) of wads and cases that others use for Lee slugs but this doesn't seem to be coming to fruition, same happened last year actually come to think of it.

While we are talking about slug loads, what powder, charge and crimp are people using with their associated wads discussed and also what choke are you shooting them through?

Currently i'm using:

Fiocchi 70mm clear cases with their 615/6 primers and I've tried both the WAA12SL & B&P Z-24 wads and have tried both a 6 star crimp and also rolled crimp some with a frangible disc on top and others plain rolled but the wad petals get a bit mangled without the frangible disc, I've also had a quick dabble with fibre wads (but then got too busy making the dummy rounds to spend anytime on further development) and I've tried 2 powders
Vectan AS 20 to 22 grains
Red Dot 18-19.5 grains

My slug loads (using Siarm slugs etc.) come in at £39/100 so around £6-£8 a 25 cart box cheaper then S&B etc.

Current load is as follows,

EVO Fiocchi T1 12G 12/70/08 05p
19 Grains NobelSport GM3 06p
12 Deer Slug 28p

Having had a quick Google it seems a common problem down to neither the wad or slug but using a tapered hull??.

Here's a copy of the load data from the Lee slug mold instructions,
