"These later rises are, no doubt, a result of incidents in which overly reticent policing appears to have allowed certificate holders (such as Michael Bird in Cumbria, 2010) to retain their firearms despite prior criminal convictions."

He can't even get the names of the perpetrators right!

Lokks like there's been plenty of shooters register for the site its on and he's been left a load of deservedly scathing comments :good:

In as much as I believe that he is entitled to his opinion ..... My opinion is that the man is a complete banana!

What we need is a robust and factual response (on the same media outlet) undermining his arguments and exposing him for the fool he is.

Quote: 'But all three British shooting rampages – Hungerford, Dunblane and Cumbria – were undertaken by firearm certificate holders with lawfully acquired weapons. Then there are the three domestic homicide cases already mentioned and domestic shootings by (Mark Saunders, 2008 and Paul White, 2013), murder/suicides (Bill Dowling in 2013; Donald Knight in 2013) and family annihilations (Christopher Foster in 2008)'.

I'm not condoning any illegal use of firearms, but 6 cases involving legally held firearms against ??? number of cases involving illegal firearms?

The sooner they learn to differentiate between the two the better it will be for all of us.

Couple of points...

a) Opendemocracy is a very left wing "liberal" (in the American sense, i.e. "anything but") organisation. No wonder they're giving Squires a platform - and no way will they let the "gun lobby" ( ) offer a realistic view.
b) He's doing what authors since time immemorial have done by trying to raise his media profile to promote his forthcoming publication - in this case, an academic study written by him.
c) Please don't spread the link. Unless we see antis shouting about it, there's no sense in giving his warped views the oxygen of publicity that he needs.

Also, just in case Squires starts trying to bullsh*t about being an ACPO adviser ever again, here's a handy email:
Peter Squires of Brighton University is not and has never been an ACPO adviser on firearms, according to ACPO itself.

He'd shoot him down! Metaphorically speaking, and with one hand tied behind his back whist wearing a blindfold and ear defenders! He might also need a respirator because of all the bullsh!t being spouted.

I was reading an article yesterday that was published in the Independent the day after Hamilton went berserk...
Similar ideas surfaced after Hungerford - as the picture emerged of Michael Ryan as an odd-ball loner, in his very different way as much a misfit as Thomas Hamilton, the author of yesterday's massacre, appears to have been. A small man, with a deep grudge and an obsession with firearms.
I had to read it a couple of times as the bold text seems to sum up Squires to a tee!

The Home Office published a research paper in 2006 on how criminals procure firearms. Unsurprisingly the report tells us what we all know, they come in into Liverpool from Ireland via the IRA who buy them in Eastern Europe.

Very few were stolen from homes and those that were, were more often than not shotguns pinched back in the 60s and 70s.

Despite all of this they 'had' to put in the report that the exact number of guns from legal users could be higher due to the research of Peter Squires, they mention no more than that, no stats, nothing, total BS in other words.
