Padersoli Sharps falling block

I have just brought a Sharps falling block rifle in 54 cal and would be grateful for some advice on making paper cartridges i have a few muzzle loaders but know nothing about making paper rounds i would like your advice i am sure some of you black powder shooters will have the info. sign85 sign85 sign92

Thanks, Classic Rifle. I did, yes, but I've just found out that my pictures are no longer there. I forgot they were linked to Flickr, which I don't have anymore. However, the cartridges were for the muzzle loading Enfield rifle. IF you would like 'em, I can divert you to another site where the article is still kicking around.

Thanks i have looked at the youtube clips not sure what paper i should use the rifle is on hold till i get my FAC back there are 3 rounds with it i have not seen. So may get some idea from them. sign92

I believe these were originally made with 'nitrated paper' to make them combustible (i.e. soaked in a solution of potassium nitrate and then dried).

Dixie Gun Works and Buffalo Arms Company in the US sell pre-nitrated papers, but they are pricey and I have no idea what restrictions there would be on shipping.

Used cigarette paper for my revolver cartridges, worked well and very easily sourced

Yes you will need combustible paper for your cartridges.

I use home made nitrated paper for my combustible cartridges, saltpetre is readily available in quantity.

Thanks for the advice i keep learning a bit more i have now been told it's best to use air mail paper and soak in a solution to make nitrated paper.

To make a super saturated solution I just keep adding the saltpetre (potassium nitrate - KNO3) to hot water until the water won't take any more and the crystals don't dissolve and just sit on the bottom.

I prefer to use 100% cotton rag paper as it is stronger when wet and therefore easier to handle.
