The majority of nthe comments to this story on the BBC site stated that this was a "non story" and young people having access to shotguns was not an issue and teaching young was to be applauded.

It's just not an issue......
In 1978 I was told by my grand dad that the secret to rifle accuracy is, a quality bullet, fired down a quality barrel..... How has that changed?

Guns dont kill people. Dads with pretty Daughters do...!

It is not honesty, it is more paperwork.

We had a grandfather and father and kid at my old club, kid was perhaps 8 years old, when I first met him he had just got his club card.
This was an exception. He was now the youngest member of the club. I have never seen such a proud grandfather and father, kid...well when I got talking to him he was actually more interested in his mountainbike but faked an interest to make his grandfather and father happy.

Very obvious that it was the older generation pushing than the kid genuinely wanting it.

So again, why license the kids that young when it is so obviously it is for the parents sake.
It serves no purpose other than making the parents happy.

The more I think about this the more I am against it. Funny when I started the thread it was just a question I asked the forum. I was sorta in the middle opinion wise. Now I am dead against it.

Ah well debate is an opinion maker as they say :)

Do you agree that there is no additional risk, Christel?

I agree that there is no additional risk if the kids are licensed or not.

However is that relevant?

Is it not more relevant not to have the extra paperwork issuing something the kids do not care about or can't really use because they have to be supervised anyway?

Insurance is the important part, not the license.

they choose to be on a database...it's honesty
No it is stupidity to CHOOSE to be on a database for the sake of it, honesty has NOTHING to do with it

Now a certificate of COMPETENCE, that would be more relevant, kids know what a REWARD is and understand the siginifance of a wee swrtifidcate or badge..like the couts used to do.!

"A Cumbrian child of just eight was among 13 youngsters under the age of 10 who were issued with UK shotgun licences in the last three years, it was been confirmed.

Figures obtained under Freedom of Information laws also reveal that two nine-year-olds in the county were also issued with shotgun licences during the same period.

Cumbria police say that all shotgun licences are issued in line with current legislation, which stipulates that there is no legal minimum age for a person to have a licence.

Senior officers stressed that shotgun licences are only granted to juveniles after a senior officer has carried out rigorous background checks. Police must be satisfied the child will get appropriate training and supervision.

The revelation has provoked strong criticism from one former Cumbrian police sergeant, who wants gun laws to be revised to stop children being issued with a licence."

Ah but that would take time, money, effort and skill Chuck!  Why bother when you can just shoot fish (who present themselves to the muzzle of your gun - i.e. licensing) in a barrel  (Puns intended)

Blackstuff, it would appear we agree again...much easier to hit non cimes and non criminals who will take it because they have something to lose, even when they are obeying the law!

No wonder people have such a low opinion of the force at times - and it must really p1ss of those who try and do an OK job with twats like him controlling them.
