How about a USB memory stick and writing to that... or the cross compile on a mac or PC?

Installing opencv is never fun!

I'm just about to graduate with a degree in computer science and I'm more than happy to help with any programming.
I've also got a pi laying around (not the camera board, but I doubt that would have a good enough resolution?

I'll have a play about tomorrow trying to make something work..

As mentioned python would be a good way to prototype, can always write the more intensive functions in cpp and import them.

5Mp should be ok I think. I worry that to high a resolution could require to much error checking for variations in light etc. I could, clearly, be wrong though :-)

I don't read my own signature!

Ah I didn't know it was 5mp, I presumed it would be VGA.

Like you say, that should be perfect.. Especially seeing that the pi doesn't have that much processing power
