You are forgetting the ease at which they banned the Olympic Revolver (Blank firing).

From what I read in the shooting press, no compensation was paid for those that found out about the Ban and handed in their guns.

Look around and some real bargains can be found, MN carbines will go for as little as GBP95 and a usable SMLE under GBP250 with the P14 even less. Undesirable shotguns such as S/S and B/A are cheap as well. Even in the UK you can find a workable rifle and a few rounds for the range for under GBP100.

lapua338, are you thinking about the clause that was introduced when it was decreed that LBRs were section 1? When it was agrred it was caveated that should LBR's at a later date be reconsidered and classified as S.5, then no compensation would be paid in respect to them. That's the only instance I can think of.
Likewise, with DM's reference to the Olympic blank firer, S.36 of the the VCR Act, which deals with "realistic imitation firearms" allows the Home Secretary to ban any article that he/she sees fit in regards to immitations. The Olympic was found to be readily convertible and was being used in crime, hence the ban. I believe that this power does not extend to "other" parts of firearms legislation.
On top of which, precedent for compensation has already been set twice, with the 88 and 97 Firearms Ammendment Acts.
But, there is a flaw in my argument above, when you look at the Brocock "ban". No compensation was paid for them. But, I suppose there was really not a complete ban as you could continue to own and shoot your SCGC air guns by putting them on FAC. (but not sell, trade or give away!)
I'm no doubt trying to second guess a government here........ impossible task. But, I reckon should there be a future "real" firearms ban, it would take the form of the previous two.

In 1978 I was told by my grand dad that the secret to rifle accuracy is, a quality bullet, fired down a quality barrel..... How has that changed?

I don't have any space in my cabinet (or the money frankly as ALL my memberships are due at the same time about now  ) but i like the idea. :)
However, i too have reservations from the compensation angle. Given the financial state the country is in at the moment i think it would be very easy for the government to get mass public support for NOT compenstating us, or at least would be able to justify a set, low end price per gun, £100 for a £30,000 SbS anyone?? :?
