Is there a limit to how deeply one can seat a bullet in a case (other than reaching the primer of course) ? We're wondering what's the biggest bullet / boolit we could pop in a 7.62x39 case to make a sub sonic round - either in 7.62 or even necking out to .338.

An interesting concept - something which Jamie and I are looking at with .308Win.

If anyone has experience/info on this it would be handy.

It is a function of boolit/bullet weight/length shape, start pressure required for said projectile, dimensions of throat and lead of rifle it is to be used in available case capacity at any seated depth and the type of powder to be used.

So a lot of variables to be considered to answer such a broad question.

What is the application for said round?

We want to improve upon ye olde De Lisle carbine. Ideally we want a rifle that is as silent as possible, accurate enough to group to 3 MoA at 200 mards and capable of giving an awesome kick when it arrives there.

What is the throat/lead like on the rifle in question.

When you say kick to you mean theoretical stopping power in ft/lbs or actual stopping power on living targets?

Oh purely theoretical, ooman: we wouldn't really shoot Farmer Giles.

The rifle doesn't exist yet, so the the throat could be whatever is most suitable, ditto rifling twist.
