Firearms Act - one for the RFD's

I just had this sent through e-mail. Is this the same requirement? On the face of it, it looks like it also applies to regular FAC holders but having checked a few websites, this doesn't seem to be the case. Is that right?

This will only apply to RFD's. GBP250/PA is a lot of money when you can do the same with a well crafted spreadsheet plus you have the ability to modify it as you go along as opposed to having to use something that is generic to the trade.

So how long does an RFD have to keep his records for ? according to the Guntrader blurb you have to record digitally all transactions of firearms you have made over the past 20 years . Which sounds a bit excessive to me . Lets hope the RFD records are secure or else you and I will be on a list for crims to obtain our details from .

spreadsheet is simple enough, multiple pages for various ammo, and main ledger etc

prefilled form with cut and paste boxes same size to copy the info into, to notify other forces of purchases etc

simples :)

Having now had the official notification letter from Surrey, I'm bumping this forward again.


Has anyone come across an electronic register package that is suitable for a small/hobby RFD, rather than a larger business?

For my small turnover, I just need a basic database that captures firearm and ammunition details, and which is reasonably searchable. Don't need all the bells and whistles such as web links or auto-form filling, etc.

I actually already had a Excel spreadsheet that used as a back-up and cloud access for my Register but, since it was just a reference tool, it wasn't absolutely 100% accurate. I can also see that an Excel spreadsheet will quickly become unwieldy and tricky to search in detail.

I'm just using Google cloud with the spreadsheet they provide, its laid out as my register is and works fine. I'm only doing a few dozen transactions a week.

I'm also keeping a hard copy register as well and it will be my day to day recording tool. Don't trust computers and I've never had data for more than 5 years before it goes tits up.

Hmm... I write code for money but typically stuff that runs on big Unix servers (though I might have a shot at it if I weren't so busy), but I'm sure someone could put something together. The hardest part is probably working out the requirements...

(I'm guessing it would have to be a local application so that it would work without Internet access and not, say, a service provided via a website?)

I would say a local app would suffice the vast majority of smaller RFD's. I have mine on a spreadsheet and I more than happy to email copies of the basic sheet to anyone interested. It works for me and having run it for some 18 months with a couple of modifications along the way it is adequate.
