No, deffo not a walt. I do shoot my No4 but not in comps and not that regularly.

A walt is a bloody liar basically, or someone who actively seeks to either attract attention to what they are not, or seeks to make others believe they are something they are not.

Twats that turn up at remembrance parades wearing medals etc to which they are not entitled.

Certain re-enactors (but not many by any stretch)

A few I have seen at the NSC (sorry, no smilie for tosser). I wont give any descriptions, they may be among us....I might be one...mother!!

There are so many exe SF and Snipers out there...apparently.

More often than not they want to make out they are something they are not (or were not).

Nothing wrong with offering advice, even if it is not from experience gained first hand. You may have heard or read it from someone or somewhere credible and just be trying to help.

I have never stuck my head in a gas oven....but I would recommend against it wouldn't you?

And to a newbie these sites are a godsend, they may even save life and limb when it comes to re-loading or fault finding.

i think Mike is referring to a usage of the term Walt which was popular with a particular clique on several forums, it was used very widely to refer to people they didn't approve of, it wasn't always applied in the manner which you are referring to Chris,in fact sometimes,apparently ,the only way to distinguish between walts and good old boys was to see who turned up at comps (they all dressed similarly and used the same rifles) tongueout

On this website I see it as being someone who is still on probation with their rifle club, perhaps doesn't even have an fac yet, has less than even a single years experience, but still has racked up hundreds of posts on here, and dispenses advice with an implied level of credability to which they are not entitled.

What is a walt?

People who own military rifles because they 'like the look/history/stopping power/muzzle brake/milspec anodising



....but never ever shoot in competitions.

So what does that make people that own hunting rifles but never hunt???.All my rifles are military types but definitely not a Walt despite not shooting in competitions.I have no desire to shoot competitions,reload or get obsessed with sticking X numbers of rounds through the same hole at 1000m but it doesn't detract from my enjoyment of shooting.

I've met many types of Walt. The American who rescued POWs during the Vietnam war was probably the most extreme Walt I've ever encountered. There was only ever one raid to rescue POWs, when I pointed this out he suddenly refused to discuss it, as it was too painful for him. His denim jacket covered in POW/MIA and Vietnam veteran patches must have been a terrible reminder.

I've also met some less extreme Walts, one claimed to have been a member of an elite unit, instead of the quite respectful airborne infantry unit where he did his training. This Walt claims to have been "attached" to the elite unit, although to be a member would have meant passing selection. I didn't get a chance to hear his war stories, but I bet they're great, pity his term of service was after the war.

The worst Walt I've ever met was never in the military, yet maintains the right to look down on others and label them as Walts. His little clique is full of Walts, they hide away in their little corner of the web and nurse their butthurt.

Gaming Walts

Usually an airsoft mong in his/her own time spending hours in a bedroom on a playstation/x-box dressed infull webbing etc. Also a sad individual with General Jumbo syndrome who believes they are an all mighty commander of a set of plastic model soldiers turning up at the local games workshop in full uniform.

While attending several reenactment events over the years i have seen some very strange cases of walting, like the day a noted historian turned up for a event wearing full victorian uniform (fine as it was a living history event) but complete with replica VC and medal group. He was quietly asked by a serving soldier to remove the ebay bling.

Also i have seen cases of "reverse walting" in the reenactment scene where serving and former soldiers of high earned rank including retired officers re-enact private soldiers with no desire for a pretend rank/trade badge/position.

ARRSE is a font of knowledge and the source of sick (but funny)jokes.
