How are we going to see civilian shooting flourish when we have the NRA (a cesspit of inadequacy) as a governing body?

When do they ever represent our interests?

Although, they're very good at justifying their own existence.

From what we have seen, at first paw, things are changing at the NRA and for the better. Why not try supporting them?

I was a member for 8 years. In good conscience I'm unable to continue my support for this so-called governing body and "premier" facility.

I'm a member of 3 affiliated clubs so no additional benefit to me in continuing to support them financially.

I wrote to Mr Mercer on the 12th Dec 2013 with respect to other matters. Still waiting for an acknowledgement and detailed reply. Even local authorities have a Customer Charter where they actually respond to you in 5 working days, or sooner, if possible. Or, send you an acknowledgment with details of who is dealing with the matter and how long they will need to respond fully.

I'm employed by the government so I'm an expert observer on mediocrity. The NRA has been in denial for as long as I care to remember. There are those who insist that that NRA are wonderful. Ultimately, that's a realistic (sad) reflection of their own standards and society as a whole.

Mediocrity has become the accepted benchmark.

Since I did not receive a response to my letter I informed the NRA that I would not renew my individual membership for 2014.

Rant over as it's not particularly helpful or constructive in this instance.

And while the buck stops first with Atherton himself, and the police as FLD, as 'uncaring' as this might sound, those that knew Atherton, knew he had guns, knew he had a temper problem and knew he 'liked a drink', but did not alert the police are also to blame IMO, perhaps more so than the police themselves.

None - this bloke wants a nationwide hotline specifically for members of the public to report "concerns" about FAC and SGC holders.

He's a desperately tragic figure who's been carefully guided into lashing out at law-abiding firearm owners by people who want to do us, collectively, harm.

Is it worthwhile somebody from one of our governing bodies trying to put a balanced viewpoint, from our perspective, over to him? Probably too little too late in this individuals case but going on the charm offensive and lushing him up a bit might make him see the other side of the coin (I know, dream on!)
It just strikes me that as shooters we just duck below the parapet too much and dont seem to openly engage in dialogue when something like this comes along to bite us. The more insular and secretive we appear to be the more the antis (and the general populous) seem to think we have a problem/something to hide.
Similar to the Freemasons. If you mention that organisation, most people just grumble and think of negatives-how many people know how much they donate to local charities/air ambulances etc.
