Best 7mm cartridge ?

#1 Post by meles meles »

We'll be at the Shooting Show soon and with a 7mm variation on our FAC we're keen to paw a few rifles in that calibre. We won't be buying on the day unless there is an absolute bargain to be had (unlikely), but it's a good place to see what's on the market. What cartridge do you lot recommend? There seems to be quite a few variants on the theme. We'd like something suitable for target shooting at 600 or 1000 mards.

7mm-08 is a choice however the straight .284 is the usual winner and the option I would choose over the .284 Shehane in the .308 bolt faces. After that you could look at the WSM and SAUM options. I have a 7mm SAUM Wildcat that has always shot well albeit it has not seen the light of day for a while.

Alternatively you could always go the Pattern 1913 route...

I shoot a 7mm-08, flat shooting with 130gn bullets. A doddle to load. Very easy on the shoulder and on barrels, so it seems.
In 1978 I was told by my grand dad that the secret to rifle accuracy is, a quality bullet, fired down a quality barrel..... How has that changed?

How about the classic 7x57mm Mauser?

Effective, popular and relatively economical to reload with modest powder charges.

7x57 and 7-08 are looking favourites so far... We wonder if they do a Tikka T3 Super varmint in those chamberings?
