Is this a dust/sand cover for SMLE mk3 muzzle?

#1 Post by ColinR »

I have a metal cover with two side clips and two impressed domes on the front. It has the markings 'lll' 'PURDEY pp. td' and what appears to be a broad arrow.

It was given me by a ww1 veteran about fifty odd years ago amongst other bits and pieces from that war..

I have a photo but not sure how to upload - any help here would be appreciated

I applaud your enthusiasm, even though your grip on reality may be somewhat tenuous......

David Similar idea but now realise the one I have would not fit the SMLE due to the bayonet lug. Mine is a clip on and off item with two impressed domes as if it were designed for a double barrel. Given Purdey as the maker I thought it might be for a double barrel shotgun but the domes (that close off the muzzle) are too small - and what looks like a stylised broad arrow on the piece would suggest military as would the source. Also the quality would be less than expected by Purdey customers. I presume Purdey was pressed into military manufacturing during WW1.

If I could get some guidance on uploading a picture all would become clear.

Picture has to be less than 800x600 pixels. If you look further down when you write a post there is a browse button, click on that and select the file and click add the file.

Alternatively send it to me and I will upload it for you. admin (at) full-bore.co.uk

Purdey of course also made double rifles, so it could be a commercial hunting rifle accessory.

From what I have read both Purdey and Holland & Holland made scope mounts during the first world war but prior to that large calibre sporting rifles were pressed into service. These included express and double rifles which were used to try to penetrate sniper shields employed by the Germans. I suppose it's a possibility if it is a double rifle muzzle guard it could relate to these????

These photos might give a better idea. The quality does not seem to be of commercial standard for a maker such as Purdey. In the horizontal groove is a marking that looks like a broad arrow suggesting a military application

Certainly not for a SMLE, why don't you contact Purdy with the pictures. I am sure that they will enlighten you. I suspect that it is for a double rifle or shotgun.

Markings make me think it's from the devils own dustbowl...

"Pty" = Australian version of "Ltd."
