Re: Subsonic .243
I would not use HP38, you would be down at 20% or less case capacity which is not a great idea.

Re: Subsonic .243
The Hodgdon loading for 308 subsonic is 8gn of titegroup which by my calculations gives about 14% case capacity.ovenpaa wrote:I would not use HP38, you would be down at 20% or less case capacity which is not a great idea.
Plus I'm sure Adam has said something about pistol powders and case capacity being less of an issue at some point in regards to subsonic loads?

Re: Subsonic .243
I know there is no documented evidence to cause worry when running such case capacities however I would not be happy unless it was wadded with something like Kapok

Re: Subsonic .243
I'm pretty sure I've read that fillers are not required with pistol powders. From my experience it wasn't necessary with titegroup.

So, vihtavuori 310 it is then?
Gonna be a costly weekend, this plus some n160, cases, 65 gr and normal loading 105gr.
Good job I just missed out in a Bushnell Laser Rangefinder Scope on Fleabay

HP38 is absolutely fine as is any fast pistol powder.Jaymo wrote:Thanks for the replies.
Am still out in Frog land so powder availability is often limited otherwise Trailboss or def Ramshot would be great
Used to reloading .300 win mag so used to not getting too many rounds out of a kilo so using just 4gr or there abouts would be like Xmas.
Cast bullets are also lacking at the local shops too so it's the usual Sierra or Hornady A-max for us.
Just looked in the cupboard and have a load of Hodgson HP38, would this be useable as I see the Vihtavuori 310 mentioned is a pistol powder?
Although not Scots I still like to save where I can :-)
HOWEVER THESE SMALL CHARGES OF FAST PISTOL POWDERS ARE FOR USE WITH CAST BOOLITS ONLY DO NOT USE WITH JACKETED, THE START PRESSURE FOR JACKETED IS FAR HIGHER THAN CAST SO THERE IS A GOOD CHANCE OF STICKING A BULLET IN THE BARREL.
This topic has been covered extensively here before so do a search and read Ed Harris's article in the library, that is published data.
Under no circumstances use filler or wads with these fast pistol powders, the whole point of using these powders is that they are not position sensitive and do not require fillers.
The low fill percentage of these loads is not an issue other than you need to take care against the possibility of double charging as you would with any load. These loads will all give low fill percentages of around 10% and that is not a problem with these fast pistol powders.
Current accepted thinking is fillers should not be used in cases with less than 60% fill density, to do so creates a whole other set if issues and consequences especially with small bore cases like the .243".
This is tried and tested, well covered, well documented ground, use those references, do not start making it up.
Secondary Explosion Effect SEE is not an issue with fast pistol powders again do a search as it has been done to death here before.

Re: Subsonic .243
Right
Can't find any 65gr leads here so it's going to have to be jacketed like the factory ammo I have.
If I get time this week I will pull a bullet and see what size load is in there.
Any way of identifying powders?
