Norma 6.5x55 Nosler Partion factory ammo. HOW MUTCH.( GULP)

#1 Post by Alpha1 »

I have just bought 20 rounds of 140grain 6.5x55 Norma Nosler partion ammo. This is the most expensive ammo I have ever bought in my life. How can any body afford to shoot this stuff. Why is it this expensive I could reload 100 rounds for what I paid for this box of 20.
Oh my God I need to lay down. emrolleyes

Don't know yet still weighing and measuring and comparing them. Will try them later to night. I have not got over the shock of the price of them yet.

Nosler Partition is quite pricey but the people I know using it tend to only buy 20-30 rounds per year so maybe not so bad. Factory Lapua Match is not much of a bargain either!

Not meaning to offend but I have three questions -

1) Why did you buy ammunition when you weren't sure it would chamber and you could have simply made ammo to fit?

2) Why hunting ammunition?

3) Considering the problems you've had, have you wondered what happened to the rifle when it was proofed?

PS Attached is SAAMI drawings of the 6.5x55.

No offence taken.
I will answer your questions in reverse order if that's Ok.
The reason I am doing this is because my understanding is to pass proof it has to be able to chamber factory ammunition this rifle obviously wont do that. I might be mistaken I know nothing about custom built rifles I have only ever owned military rifles except for my Steyr.

Why hunting ammunition I was told the previous owner used it for stalking I find that hard to believe now.

I can make ammo to fit but I can not understand why it wont chamber factory ammo.

Thanks for the drawing by the way.

No worries - thought the drawing might help but I couldn't locate CIP specifications for the 6.5x55.

My understanding of the proof process was the rifle just had to survive two proof loads but not necessarily chamber factory ammo.

If the previous owner was hand loading ammo it still could have been used for stalking or perhaps they used a lighter (bullet weight) factory ammo with a shorter COAL - don't know what's available?

Can any body tell me what are common bullet weights in 6.5x55 for deer stalking.

Factory or home loads?

Edit: when I had a 6.5x55 I used 120gn Nosler BT which did the job on Roe deer.

If this link works it'll you an idea of what's available - http://www.midwayuk.com/epages/Midway_U ... talog=true
