cleaning an air rifle barrel

Hi all ,
ive got a falcon fn19 pcp air rifle and ive NEVER cleaned the barrel inside ... (i was told not to)
I've now been told by a friend that the barrel should be cleaned on a regular basis ....
Whats the consensus of opinion ???

There are those that do, and those that don't. Some, unable to make their minds up, do a little and then slack off. It doesn't seem to make much difference either way. We suspect that in an airgun firing decent pellets there isn't going to be any build up of crud worth bothering about. Maybe a wipe through with a lightly oiled patch would be useful to remove any condensation from the barrel and prevent rusting.

I used to occasionally clean some of mine but it didn't really seem to achieve anything so I stopped. When I did clean them I only ever used a pull through (20lb fishing line) and a patch. There's certainly no need to get in there with a brush or C2R.

I'd only clean them now if they got rained on or I was really, really bored.

I've been told by a friend, who is s bit of a rocket scientist, that the major problem with air rifle barrels is that they become ever-so slightly magnetised over time. He reckons that its the constant movement of the barrel though the earth's magnetic field that does this....so break barrel rifles are especially affected.

A magnetic barrel is imperceptibly attracted or repelled to the left or the right which affects accuracy very slightly.

The cure is to stand in an open field, well away from magnetic fields resonating from dwellings and power lines, and twirl the barrel around your head 28 times left and 22 times right whilst facing towards the North Pole. Or 33 times left and 28 times right facind towards the South Pole.

He advises that man made fibres and natural fibres can interfere with the de-magnetisation ceremony, so its best to be butt-naked.

So next time you notice that your air rifle needs a clean, try this instead. I bet it will work just as well....and its kinder to the environment too.

Does it also depend on whether you are in the North or South Hemisphere and also whether the difference between Grid and Magnetic is East or West ? I was also advised against doing it 10 days either side of a solar flare too.

I would fire a few VFG felt cleaning pellets through the barrel of my target air pistol every couple of months. Not sure if this actually helps accurasy as it never deteriorated but there again I never allowed it to get dirty in the first place.
