Removing scope rings

#1 Post by froggy »

Salut ,

Basically I know sweet F*ck-all how those rings are fixed on this scope .... So, based on that photo, how difficult/easy do you think it would be to remove the rings from this scope ? Simple screw-driver job ? or something not to be attempted by an amateur like your most humble & clueless servant ?

Thanks VM for your help ;)

They are possibly/probably soldered to the scope tube. The rear ring is almost certainly soldered by the front one may or may not be.

Thanks Chapuis,
That is what I fear ... Tell me if I am wrong but usually is soldered with a kind of pewter (?)
Has anybody got any experience with that sort of job ? Would heating the base/claw be enough to "desolder" without risking any dammage, beside cosmetical marks on the tube, to the scope itself ?

IF the scope is an Ajack 4x90, the ONLY legitimate way to remove the rings would be to send the scope to me

I'll get the rings removed overnight, then get the scope back to you by about 2035 or 2045 or so: not a 24-hr clock reading!

It could be silver solder but I wouldn't swear to it. In the past many European gunsmiths would disassemble the scope, fit the tube in place and silver solder it and then re-assemble. Now I'm not saying that this was done with this scope but it is possible as scopes were fitted to rifles and intended to stay with that rifle for life..

The rear one looks to be soldered. My advice would be to send it to someone like Chris at C&G, his mother works on this sort of equipment, that's what I did soldered rings removed after scope taken apart, then tube re blued before being re built now have a perfect Zeiss 1930's dated scope.
