USELESS

Why can they not produce them in a format that can be edited and my details added electronically?

I have to print the forms, fill in by hand - twice for SGC and FAC whereas I could do it a lot quicker and neater on my PC and then they would be there for the next renewal.

It is possible to edit and add your information in on a PDF though not as elegant as a word doc. The next step is online applications / variations :)

The one I downloaded had the Security Settings such that Filling of Form Fields is not allowed!

Why not make it a Word Document - the old ones were. Even if they are set up as forms ...

Have a look around the forum, I created and uploaded editable forms a few months ago

It would be much better if you could just fill the whole thing in on-line and submit it directly as well as generating a PDF for your own records.

I've not seen a decent form yet in MS Word that worked properly between all the versions of MS Word floating around in the wild let alone Open Office or the other free ones which are doomed to chase MS's hacking its own formats around constantly.

Sounds like it could be a fun little project for someone. A proper national online system would be great though.

Editable versions of the forms are available that permit you to fill them in online, though they hgave to be printed and signed afterwards. We think Cambridge Constabulary at least have them available for download. If no-one can find them, we'll have a try at uploading them here later.

West Mercia are to trial a system from next May (we understand) that will allow the forms and payment to be completed online. receipt will be acknowldeged by email or SMS and the granted stiffycate posted out to you soon after. This will speed up the system and cut the costs enormously, negating the need for any increase in fees. The FEOs will be able to spend more time doing interviews and far less time doing paperwork.

At least, that's the plan. http://www.westmercia.police.uk/firearm ... -news.html
