Soviet PU scope questions

Salut ,

My understanding is that on the PU 91/30 the elevation numbers were calibrated for 100's of meters, ie : # 1 to 100m, # 2 to 200m , 3 300m etc.. etc ...

I read that according to the official Red Army manual , the PU scope should be zeroed for 100 meters and that the turret markings should be on # 3 against the index of the upper dial and set the side dial at 0 while elsewhere and more logically to me (??) the turret for elevation should be at 1 and of course the one for windage at 0.

So why would the army manual suggest a setting on #3 for 100 meters ?


Also I understand that each windage click will move the point of impact by 10cm at 100m.
Is that correct ?

I thought they were mostly zeroed at 300m?

I believe it is set at 100m on "3" so the elevation turret then acts as a BDC for 7.62x54r.Its much the same on the later POSP scopes, on the 8x42vd the elevation turret is numbered from 0-20.If it is zeroed at 100m on "2“ the turret can then be used as a BDC for 150gr 54r.

Has the PU scope got "half clicks" between the numbers?,If so 200m may be "3" and a click.The Russians used to shim with solder, ive seen a few Dragunov scopes with mounts shimmed that way.If it shoots ok with the reticule offset I would leave it, if you can live with it being offset.If you go have to go down the grinding route I'd file a little and check often.One of the guys at my club has a PU on a 91/30 and he found it helpful to zero at 50m initially and then tweak it at 100m as he was struggling to get on paper straight off at 100m.I had a go and found the reticule posts too thick for my liking.

The following may be of help to POSP users

On a POSP 8x42 the elevation turret settings are;

2= 100m
3= 200m
4+ a click=300m
6= 400m
8= 500m
10= 600m
13= 700m
16=800m

With the top chevron at 800m the chevrons below mark 900,1000,1100 and 1200m respectively

Elevation is 3.25cm per click at 100m
Windage is 5cm per click at 100m

It's a SVT PU scope (post-war arsenal refurb) . It is in my club safe at the mo but from memory it does not have "half clicks".

Half click is a bit nondescript.There is usually a detent position halfway between each number on the turret, so for example 3+ a click would be halfway between 3 and 4 smile2

I have a PU scope on my Mosi Sniper and I zeroed at 300 and set the dial to 3, and I use 1 for 100M, 2 for 200M etc etc, I have even pushed to 900M which is very challenging considering it's less than 4x mag.
