Kahles ZF95 scope info required.

#1 Post by Alpha1 »

I have a Kahles ZF95 fitted to my .308 Steyr it has calibrated drums for the .308 cartridge. You just turn the dial to the distance required any were between 100yards to 800yards.

I am so impressed with it that I have bought another one to go on my recently acquired tikka m55 in 6.5x55 my question is does any body know if kahles does a calibrated drum for the 6.5x55 the one it came with is set up for .308. If they do were would I get one.

I had the tikka out to day at 300yards for the first time I managed 8 rounds before the weather shut us down rolling fog and torrential rain. **** **** Our next full bore range is not till March next year.

That is a job for your lathe. machine the existing graduations off and anodise or paint the drum black. Wrap it in turn of matt tape and zero and shoot at your preferred distances marking each one carefully on the tape. Place the drum back on the lathe. wind the cutter in and index the drum to the desired location then wind the cutter across and it will score a mark, repeat this until you have the desired depth/thickness, zero the dial, wind out and repeat.

:goodjob:

There was a ballistic cam for 6.5x55mm along with many others (7mm Remington Mag, .308Win 168gr Hirtenberger Match, etc). The 6.5x55 was based upon the ballistics of the Norma VM cartridge with a 9.01g (139gr) bullet (800 m/sec, 2625 ft/sec). According to Kahles the P/N was #335-1573.

There was also a blank one for customising (#335-1723).

Don't know if these are still available as spare parts?

I am sat staring at the turret yes I see what you mean it could be done if I was brave enough. If I had a spare turret I would be tempted to have a go.

Make one, a piece of 6082 or even better 7075 T6 and off you go, it is a lovely machining job to cut your teeth on.

You have got me thinking now its set up all ready to go. The guys at work ground a load of cutters and parting off blades for me and a boring bar. I have had a couple of test runs with silver steel bar. Hmmm.

Find a lump of 1" OD bar about 4" long and half it so you have enough to grip and a spare if it goes wrong. Chuck it up, face it off and machine the diameter to close to the greatest outer diameter. Drill and then bore the internals, machine the outer to size and remove from the chuck, I mark the position of the work piece to chuck jaw with a marker pen so I can always return it reasonably accurately. Make sure it fits, if not modify to suit.

Return to the lathe and part off an 1/16" longer than needed. Now with the bit left over turn a mandrel to allow the drum to be supported firmly, stick the drum on and face off to size. Remove the drum and drill the hole(s) in the top or side as required.

Admire your work then order yourself an ER32 Collet set as it will save time and hassle in the future and allow you to grip delicate items such as the drum. I hope you have left the mandrel in the chuck as you will need it hold the drum whilst you engrave the graduations on it.

Sounds easy when you describe the process(I DONT THINK SO) I just might give it a go I have nothing to loose.
Is this the type of collet set you mean.

Yes that is a collet chuck and collets, they allow you to grip thin walled items without damaging or marking the work piece. Sets like the ones shown will enable you to grip everything from 3mm to 20mm diameter and imperial equivalents. You can also use 5C type collets however they are probably less suited to your needs as they have a reduced compression range and are slower to use. I use collet chucks a lot, get a reasonable set and keep them clean and they will allow you to remove the work piece and replace it with fairly reasonable accuracy.

I emailed Kahles service centre in Austria and asked them if they do a cam for the ZF95 in 6.5x55 and if so were would I get one.
I received a reply to day asking for my address so they could send me one for free. How is that for service. YES GET IN.

They sent me details of the Cam its set up for a 139grain Norma VM bullet. Running at 2625ft/sec. The cam is calibrated from 100 to 800meters. Its in the post yippee. :shakeshout: :shakeshout: clapclap   party2
