.22 rimfire ammunition recommendations

#1 Post by meles meles »

We're almost out of rimfire ammunition, and so would appreciate some recommendations for ammunition when we re-stock. We have the following rimfire rifles:

.22 LR Remington 597 semi-auto
.22 LR Lee Enfield bolt action
.22 LR Greener Martini action
.22 LR Izhmash Biathlon toggle action

and, in .22 WMR, an Anschutz 1516 bolt action

We've used CCI Minimags in all of them and find them quite accurate, but we're open to other suggestions. We've tried Winchester T22 and had quite a few duds in the 597, and the RWS Geco performed quite well too though again with a few duds in the 597.

We'd also like to try some sub-sonics (but don't have a condition for hollow points).

In terms of WMR, we have used Federal without a problem, but are open to other ideas.

SK+ works well for us at competition level with several members of the Scotland GR Squad using it to very good effect.

We've just found this test report, oomans,

and it seems that overall, CCI Minimags offer a good performance to value ratio.

+1 on the SK if you only want it for target shooting. Dump the Remington 597, gun at fault not the ammo.

I was told, and would like to have this confirmed by those more knowledgeable, that slower rounds are more accurate than faster ones. I don't use HV ammo in target rifles for that reason, is this correct?

For reference Mr Badger, I use CCI standard in my Martini and any of mini mag, centurion or winchester in my semi auto. I've heard good things about RWS for my particular semi auto but not tried them. People at our club don't like Remington in semi autos.
The above post probably contains sarcasm or some other form of attempted wit, please don't take it to heart.

I'd rather throw rocks, than use Remington rimfire ammo. ****

RWS, HV and SS from their field line, is excellent - although the local rabbits might disagree! ;)

The problem with .22LR rifles is that you really need to try the ammunition in the particular rifle before you commit to buying any amount. What will cycle one semi-auto may not suit the next, what shoot really tight groups in one might be only so-so in another rifle, even of the same make and model.

.22 rimfire ammunition also varies a good deal from batch to batch - my current batch of Eley HP subsonics is only doing about 980fps, the last block was doing around 1025fps (The box says 1065)

Here's a short video of me trying 6 different types of .22 ammunition at 65 yards (windy)

At least you don't get misfires with the rocks. smile2

Have to agree about the RWS ammo being good though Eley subs have slightly the edge in my CZ rifle though if we are talking high velocity the HV RWS is easily the most accurate ammo that I have ever shot in the CZ.
I can also endorse SK ammo for gallery rifle target shooting. There are a couple of the Welsh gallery rifle squad in our club and they introduced us to SK and we haven't been disappointed by it yet.

Salut,

My french club only stocks Blazer. We have been shooting it with satisfaction for years. I use it mainly in my DES69 but overall with all the other club members that is a very wide rage for guns that feed on it without any issues :good:

22 LR Izhmash Biathlon toggle action. Do you practice biathlon ?
