Safe storage

#1 Post by tkd67 »

Evening all, I ll get straight to it.
My safe is fixed in one of my bedrooms past the bathroom, but in 2 weeks we will be moving the bathroom into that bedroom, due to spending a few pennies.

My question is, I'll have to take off gun safe and leave it in our room till the ex bathroom is made into a utility room, what can I do with my 2 rifles.

Can they go to a member of my club for safe storage, or would I have to pay, a RFD to hold them until I relocate the safe, not sure on the legislation on this, and lastly would I have to inform the police.

Regards, lee.

If you can't secure the safe to the wall where it's going yet, an RFD is your best route.

AFAIK, you can't loan them (as you would a shotgun) to another certificate holder - unless of course they have the slots open on their FAC (but that'd be major hassle).

Do any of your clubs have storage facilities? If they do, they may well not levy a charge, wheras RFDs often do.

Definitely find storage elsewhere; having your rifles out of the safe for a few hours whilst it is moved from one place to another in your home is OK (as long as you don't go out in the meantime), but leaving them in a safe which is not securely attached to the fabric of the building for a period of days or weeks is not a smart move.

Have you any way of fitting them to any wall in the house temporarily ? Or in attic ?

Hi thanks for replies, well there's no way of fitting safe to any wall until the safe will end up in its intended location, didn't think about restrictions on personal and wether they are untitled to hold such for me while the work is carried out, around 2 weeks, although them being club members.

I think my best bet would be having them stored at an RFD, the length will be for 2 weeks, I'll have to ask about such charges, can't see it being that costly.

You could go on holiday for 2 weeks and have your gun with you at your hotel, secured with nothing more than a chain and a padlock. Yours will be in a safe. Just saying..... ;)

Can you lie the cabinet down and screw to a floor or the attic joists?

Nothing in law says your firearms must be in a gun cabinet, let alone a cabinet bolted to a wall.

If you have a temporary situation like this, guns in cabinet, cabinet tucked away and bolts stored elsewhere. Fits the bill of reasonable measures to ensure security IMHO.
