Knock on effects from the USA.

#1 Post by Sandgroper »

This has been mentioned before about how shooters in the USA are buying up big, but this is the first time I've seen it the the mainstream media.
Gun ammo running out in Australia as US citizens buy big

Ammunition wholesalers in Australia are expecting one of the biggest supply shortages in recent history with American civilians purchasing arms at record speed.

Scrutiny of gun laws in the United States is thought to have sparked the gun sales boom, with the flow-on effects expected to reach Australian shores within weeks.

Some of the most popular bullets will soon be unavailable in Australia and New Zealand and will not be restocked for about another six months.

Firearm importers in Australia are being told to brace for supplies to run extremely thin or completely dry within weeks.
mporter Jade Cleaver says he has been buying more than usual in anticipation.

"We've been stockpiling ammunition in a sense so we don't run out," he said.

"Basically the American community is consuming the ammunition and the ammunition manufacturers can't keep up."

Australia's eight main firearm wholesalers source about 80 per cent of their stock from the United States.

Mr Cleaver says producers are operating around the clock in a bid to keep up with demand.

"There's only so much they can produce," he said.

"There's only 24 hours in a day and putting capital out for more machines.

"I know the products that we import into Australia; they've gone from running 12-hour shifts at their companies to running 24 hours."

Reloading components may go the same way. If the regime bans IMPORT of ammo and components then there will be an issue. I am told CCI primers for example are made in Canada not the USA.

In Cabela's yesterday, shelves filling a little. There's no 12g slug or 22rf CCI mini-mags. There was some 9mm nylon tip coated ammo around at $13.99/50...not what I would shoot. Plenty 7.62x39, 7.62x54R - and .303 British!!!!!!!!

Buck shot plentiful, bird shot Ok. Most pistol ammo and rifle 5.56 /.308 is scarce.

Chuck, it must only be factory ammo that is in short supply then. I was out buying powder yesterday and there was no shortage of anything I needed so I don't know what's going on.

Oh by the way mate, CCI primers are made in Lewiston, Idaho. You really shouldn't listen to range gossip.

This is going to become a self fulfilling prophecy. The more people say there is a problem the more there will be a problem as people scramble to buy stock.

Agree with the above. I went to three shops in the last week. At every place I saw people buy 2/3 times more than normal quoting America as the reason. The shops here have been unable to meet demand on the most popular items because of it.

You say there's a shortage, so people stock up, causing a shortage. Happens with everything, fuel being the most prevalent in the UK.
It's funny watching the guys on YouTube who've bought everything they could find in their local Walmart, then the next guy complaining he can't get anything at all.
The problem I see is that the administration may use this to their advantage when passing bills that, seemingly, alleviate the shortages, when in fact they are probably causing extra restrictions and sneaking in some new rules by the back door.
That's how our MPs would do it anyway.

Tescos had no ammo whatsoever yesterday and neither did Sainsbury's and Waitrose. I think that's a sad indictment of the way it is now in the UK...

This must be the "good ole boys down in the Southern and South Western States panicking then, I sent an email to a buddy of mine over in Maryland asking if he was seeing shortages in the shops there and his reply was in the negative. Again I can't say that I have seen any shortages here in our local shops, been able to buy what I want when I want. It could be all those damn tourists coming over a couple of times a year to shoot and then going home again that's doing it
