Expanding Ammunition/Bullets
How is Expanding Ammunition permissioned/authorised on a FAC. Is it by calibre and quantity or is it a condition?
I have obtained a permission for vermin/ground game and paid stalking and am about to send off a letter to the Firearms Licensing Office but am unsure what to ask for with respect to expanding ammo, I will be shooting .22LR (rabbits), .260 (Stalking) and .223 (Fox). I also have .308, 6mmXC, .300Blk and .303, which probably with the exception of the .303 could also be used for hunting.
Any ideas?

HI John,
on my ticket, any calibres which I may buy expanding ammo for are listed as a condition and any expanding ammunition would count towards my regular limits.

Re: Expanding Ammunition/Bullets
John, as above, the rifle/s need to be conditioned for the main quarry species, ie Deer/Fox and AOLQ (if you live in one of the more enlightened areas) also most forces will count expanding bullets as fully loaded rounds and count them against your hold limit (but not all YMMV) nothing much wrong with asking for the .303 if you feel you can hit the quarry, it's more than capable. thats a lot of .30 cals so you may struggle to get them all listed razz although I can't see why not, as to the .223 get that listed for Muntjac,CWD and AOLQ, then you have a multi-purpose rifle, and save the 260 for bigger stuff, or just shoot everything with the .308 tongueout

What if your FAC doesn't state any particular type? Are you free to buy anything?

Re: Expanding Ammunition/Bullets
if no type is specified then you can only buy FMJ's or bullets that are designed for target use, ie non-expanding, please no one ask about A-maxsSevenSixTwo wrote:What if your FAC doesn't state any particular type? Are you free to buy anything?

Re: Expanding Ammunition/Bullets
Thanks for the input, FAC went back today for changes to the Additional Conditions. Asked for the following words:
Have to wait and see if they agree, I also asked for separately listed Expanding Ammunition and Expanding Missiles in .22LR, .223, 6mm, 6.5mm and .308.5. The firearms and ammunition shall be used for shooting vermin and ground game / fox / deer and, in connection with the management of any estate, other wildlife, and zeroing on ranges, or land over which the holder has lawful authority to shoot.
6. The 12 Bore Shot Gun serial number XXXXXXX may also be used for game and clay pigeon shooting.
7. The 12 Bore Shot Gun serial number XXXXXX and solid slug ammunition shall be used for target shot gun and practical shot gun shooting on ranges suitable for the safe use of that class of firearm and over land which the holder has lawful authority to shoot and with adequate financial arrangements in place to meet any injury or damage claim.
8. The firearms and ammunition may also be used for target shooting, and only whilst a member of the Highpower Rifle Association, on ranges suitable for the safe use of that class of firearm and with adequate financial arrangements in place to meet any injury or damage claim.
9. The certificate holder may possess, purchase or acquire expanding ammunition, or the missiles of such ammunition, in the calibres authorised by this certificate and use only in connection with: the lawful shooting of deer; the shooting of vermin or, in connection with the management of any estate, other wildlife.

Re: Expanding Ammunition/Bullets
John,
My force (Herts) do not give a separate entitlement for expanding bullets, they just allow me to purchase either type (S1 or S5) for the calibres I need within the overall total, (ie so many 223 which can include expanding)
However Essex and a few others I've dealt with specify a separate total for expanding ammo/bullets, (ie so many 223 solid, and so many 223 exp)
Matt.

Re: Expanding Ammunition/Bullets
Is this for rounds of ammunition?
More evidence of making it up as they go along
As far as I am aware and correct me if I am wrong but you can buy as much bullets (match type) as you wish for reloading they don't count on your ticket towards your full entitlement but expanding ammunition does even though in seperate components.
Sounds to me like you can't do this due to your restriction possibly.

Re: Expanding Ammunition/Bullets
I have no restriction on the amount of 'Match' bullets I am allowed to buy, same as anyone else. This is specifically about bullets (Components) and ammunition (topped with a bullet designed to expand) designed to expand and primarily used for hunting.
