There's no need to complicate it if you're just practicing - Like your self, I have a dummy round (copy of PPU) to quickly set the die up - As I only use a low load (39 gn N140), I'm not too fussy about the powder or seating (maybe checking 1 in 5 to begin with), and can knock up 50 practice rounds, that still shoot well, pretty quickly...
...but if I'm loading for a competition, then I try to get the powder within 0.1 gn and check every COL...and it makes a significant difference to the group size.

Re: .303 COL question
I am not complicating things, I have spent a lot of time and effort on generating a consistent round not to mention the time and expense of the kit and to be honest I enjoy the reloading just as much as going for a blat. I am simply trying to chase out the variables and this being one of them.
It ain't rocket science either and I understand that even the SMK bullets have some variables (but not as much as the PPU I used to fire) - The LEE seating die I use, would it make a difference to switch to RCBS dies for this? also whats the difference to the standard die, and the competition one???
