Hi Paul,
I first heard of this mod a couple of years ago from a good (Senior ex Army Armourer) friend of mine, he comes in very handy with all sorts of technical firearms advice.
In fact, he came up trumps when Gaz had his No4 woes a little while back.....I keep trying to get him to join our merry band, but he he's kept rather busy with other forums.
This scope happened to have the modification made to it, it has gone off to a new owner I'm afraid so I can't give you the specs...I should have taken pics/measurements I know, but I have a lot on my plate at the moment, so unfortunately it just didn't happen.
However, its quite simple really, just drill a hole through the latch, into the casting below, tap it out and fit suitable screw.
I don't know if this was ever an official IDF mod, it was apparently used unofficially at Unit level in the UK, probably towards the end of the L1's time, when replacement springs were running out.......It seems to work!
I would say though, in Military terms, not a great idea, because if the scope became U/S, the iron sights couldn't be used quickly....not a pressing concern at Severnside thank god, anything over 100yds these days and I can't even see the target with iron sights...
