Cci std vs Eley club

#1 Post by zzr1100 »

I had a go using Eley club with the club rifle I normally use (BSA century) I noticed no difference in zero or on scores (although the Eley smelled different ... Odd I know)
Now seeing as the club sells cci for £2.80 for 50 and the Eley for £4.50 ...
Decision made !!!

It does depend on the range? at 25yds I too see little difference between ammo or even rifles vs. basic shooter ability. But at 50m & certainly 100yds with 22RF cartridge. CCI & Eley Std, Blazer etc will simply not perform vs Eley Club or Match. & at 100yds the performance gap is marked e.g. at 100yds e.g. I measured a 6MOA group from Remington target vs. Eley club but another 1&1/2 moa improvement over club using Lapua CentreX & I know the BSA Century will add 1.5moa to the group at 100yds vs. an Anschutz Match 54 too. The 22 NSRA bull si ~1MOA wide at 100yds.

The smell will be down to slight differences in the chemistry of propellant & the burning of lubricant.

Thanks for your reply .. I'm shooting at 25m ... Your reply raises another question ..
I'm getting scores in the mid 90s (25m 10 roundal target) Standing but with elbows on the shelf,no sling .. I can't seem to get much better on a consistent basis ... Can I expect any better with this rifle and ammo combo ?

I shot some Eley match and some CCI minimags through a scoped CZ452 on the clubs 25M indoor range last week. The Eleys were hitting about half inch lower and had a slightly tighter group compared to the CCI's.

Apparently minimags are supersonic .. Eley match aren't .. That might explain the difference ..

Yup - the MM move at around 1200fps, the Eleys are a tad slower so dropped a bit but managed tighter groups, although I'm not sure there was enough improvement to make the extra cost worth it (100 CCI cost £7.00 while 100 Eley Match cost £10.80).

Am afraid its probably down more to technique, position, skill, breathing, trigger control, eyesight etc than rifle / ammo combo. Prone +sling +glove traditional TR style you might get it to 96-7

But how are you scoring those 10 bulls? if you touch the line it's out! Many other targets are opposite = touch to count.

Scrub it totally clean & use Lapua Centre X might add 1-2 to a 10 card series average. Whereas do the same in a Match 54 might add 3 or 4.

im counting the scores as touch the line and score down .. if it was the other way around it would be 100x100 almost every time !
i think im just going to keep practicing with the "old nail" until i can afford something a bit better for myself !

At 25m there's no reason why that rifle, and just about any half decent ammo shouldn't average above 98, and with some possibles - The difficulty is with the position you're shooting from...

...which is why the scores (and the targets you posted before) are pretty impressive - you obviously have a good eye, but without a sling makes holding the rifle still and triggering very difficult - Also if the bench you're resting your elbows on is straight across (?), this would make it even more difficult to put your elbows in a natural position...

As an experiment, you could try shooting on a rest/bag (something soft, so the gun doesn't bounce)...this would test the rifle and ammo without the difficult position...
