Walther G22 - any owners, any opinions?

Well, picked up this thing on Friday:



Came as a package with the rifle, case, scope, mounts and Walther moderator.

I read a few reviews before buying it, I'm still divided on whether or not I like the look of the thing, but it's certainly different.

In several of the reviews saying how much of a PITA it was to clean due to the way it needed to be stripped. I just thought "No worries, I enjoying stripping and cleaning my guns" - I was wrong. It's a fiddly, poorly thought out mini-nightmare. If it didn't shoot well I'd soon be putting in for my first one for one...

Thankfully it seems pretty good. It's average 10 shot group was pretty impressive - around half an inch at 25m, using a front rest. Considering my own accuracy - the rifle itself must've been pretty good.

Not really sure I'll do much to it other than buy some spare magazines, but it looks like a good stop-gap while I save up for a fancy Lantac or similar.

i did contemplate getting one of these, but after reading reviews and seeing what a pain it was to clean i was put off.

the final nail so to speak was seeing a rather scary clip on youtube of a g22 blowing up, the guy was lucky not to get hurt imo.

i've seen a number of people saying that accuracy is good though.

just out of curiousity, whats the scope you've got on there?

I own one, my first .22 semi-auto, currently out of action. When it worked it was brilliant, very accurate and comfortable to shoot, I used to score well in the Phoenix with it. However as the op says its a nightmare to clean and its reliability is often questionable

Scope is a Simmons Whitetail 1.5 - 5 x 20. Not mega impressive but good enough to get me started.

I'd heard some mutterings about some early G22's having very tight chambers, so a few guys from the states using very cheap / off-spec ammunition managed to get the bullet stuck enough as it chambered so that the bolt hit the rim with enough force to detonate it.

Scary stuff, but haven't heard of any of that over here. UK shooters don't seem to buy bargain bucket (literally) ammunition.

I was trying to remember what this reminded me of and then it came to me, have any of the High Point 9mm 995TS carbines made their way to the UK yet. Yeah I know they look completely different but it kind of reminded me of the original 9mm High Point which was fugly (not that I'm saying your G22 is fugly as well). I've seen a couple of 995TS carbines at the range and I must admit for a carbine that's selling for under $300 they are pretty damned accurate and looks much better than the first carbine they brought out.

They come with two 10 rnd mags but there is also higher capicity mags for them as well, they also come in .40 and .45ACP as well.

I don't think you can own a G22 and be worried about people saying it's ugly.

...it certainly looks different. That's enough for me. Kinda reminds me of an Aug Para too.

I like them! I didn't find cleaning it too onerous a task. I only sold mine because my mate basically begged me to sell it to him and after two years (and very little shooting) he's offering it back to me for nothing!

I'm sorely tempted but my spare 22 slot is already allocated. :cool2:

My biggest gripe about the G22 is mating the upper and lower receivers back together. If it's not done right the magazine won't lock into place and it messes with the zero. sign01

I’ve got a G22, which I bought off a friend. So far, I’ve not had to take it apart to clean it, though I do put a bore snake through it every now and again.

I read that they were a bit fussy with ammo, so when I first got it, I tried about ½ dozen or more different types of rounds. The only one that I’ve tried so far that were completely useless were CCI Blazer. Now I just use CCI Standard or RWS Geco. On balance, I think the CCI Standard are a bit better.

The one thing I did read is that the G22 isn't setup for HV ammunition. Most people assume that because it's a semi, the more oomph the better, but apparently the bolt recoil springs are designed for standard velocity ammunition. Using HV's causes the bolt to bounce back prematurely.

That's more or less what my friend told me - the G22 hated CCI mini mags, but worked perfectly well on cheap club ammo!
