Carrying a rifle on a motorbike

Hi guys looking to travel a fair distance to collect a new rifle, thinking of taking the bike in order to avoid traffic,

Is there any laws against having a slip on your back whole riding?

No law against it - but I wouldn't do it personally (unless it was a take down rifle).

The wind has a massive effect on big 'sails' on your back - I wouldn't want it swinging around in traffic. Also, what would happen in an accident? Very dodgy ground IMHO.

Try and centralise it across your back to avoid wiping out cyclists and wing mirrors and avoid drag bags as they truly are like a sail.

As a thought and depending on the rifle and slip dimensions, and the motorbike (Of course) can you strap it lengthways along the bike? I ride a BMW and could probably do something like this with a smaller rifle.

I have a cut down plastic case which bolts on the rear rack and can carry a shotgun, taken the barrels to have work done on them this way. A rifle I can break down would fit in them too. Wouldn't fancy transporting a big rifle though.

I regularly ride "shotgun" perfectly legal, when I asked my FLO he confirmed this.. He did say to "try to disguise it being a shotgun so as to make it less likely for someone to try and take if from you" ?!?!?

I had an interesting experience when carrying my rifle on my back on a scooter a couple of years ago. It was the day they discovered the liquid bomb plot and there was massive security at the airports. So there I was travelling up the M42 passed Birmingham airport heading for Kingsbury in the early evening traffic when I noticed the West Mids police heli in my 10 o'clock. As I rode further up the M42 it remained in the same position relative to me and when I came off the motorway at junction 9 it was still there ahead of me. When I rode on the range it swooped down low and then flew off. Was it tracking me, your guess is as good as mine but it seems too much of a co-incidence.
