Re: Lever Action Rifles

#21 Post by ptheta »

I've shot a couple of practical courses down at Shield (near Dorchester). The targets vary from 5m to about 15m. My favourite is the 3 gun competition, which is pistol calibre, .22, and 12G. The pistol calibre stuff is mostly lever actions but you also see LBRs and a few of the 9mm lever release guns too.

I have a Rossi carbine in .38/.357. When I take it down the indoor range it's not very inspiring but it's brilliant fun steel plate shooting.

You don't need to be a UKPSA member to take part but you do need to do the UKPSA safety course. Finding somewhere that does that can be royal PITA. I would guess that Harlow would be your closest club, Ovenpaa.

NRA run Gallery Rifle comps, UKPSA have accepted Gallery Rifle as a discipline. Both accept optical/red dot etc

Shoot 'em the way they built 'em I say (Says he with a Williams peep sight on the back!)

My favourite fun the lever action
I can see I need to try this at some point, what is the usual COF?

They do all the old pistol, Service one (The old Whitehead) 1500, Bianchi, Advancing Target, Man v Man, Timed and precision etc, etc.

Have a look at the NRA website, there's an Imperial Entry Form (July) and all the pistol competitions are there.

In 1978 I was told by my grand dad that the secret to rifle accuracy is, a quality bullet, fired down a quality barrel..... How has that changed?

If you are looking for a serious competition gun, then there is only one choice.....Marlin.
Winchesters are fine when they are working, proving you can put up with something as slack as a s/h backside. Try getting spares for one too....ha ha ..ha.When the new haven factory was shut a few years ago, winchester spares sold out overnight.

A marlin can be tuned, and slicked up to cock with your little finger only....i,ve done into the hundreds of them.Spares are plentiful, and they are side, eject...useful with optics. Good triggers available for them too.

Winchesters are so finicky, i flatly refuse to work on them anymore these days. I,ve lost count of the wasted man-hours, that cant be charged for, trying to make them work.

Bull s*** I have had several winchester under levers I have all ways shot winchesters the one I have now I have had since the pistol ban I can dismantle it in 30 minutes and change any part on it no problem if need be.

The only thing I have changed is the lifter and it was my fault it broke.

I have shot every comp refered to in all of the previous posts using hand loaded ammo it will shoot any load in 38/357 as fast as you can work the action.

There will.be some Winchesters that work well and there will be some that are dogs. I'm sure the same is true with Marlins, but the number will be a lot less.

How many of the home nations shoot Marlins, and how many shoot Winchesters?

Nuff said 8-)
It's not the pace of life that concerns me, it's the sudden stop at the end!

Good for you.
I can completely dismantle a marlin in around 10 minutes. I can also buy any spare part i wish, straight from Edgars. What they dont have, can be had straight from Brownells. Try that with a winchester.

How many of the current national teams shoot winchesters ? I cant remember anyone ....and i shoot for the England squad myself in smallbore, so i do tend to take notice.

I just gave a proffessional opinion on them, from someone who works on these guns, very regularly, and wont work on winchesters anymore, because i wont work for nothing.

Nothing wrong with disagreement...rudeness, i dont like.

I had a s/h 30/30 Winchester 94AE XTR after the pistol ban.

Seem to remember someone on GT telling me off for fitting a recoil pad but it was a good project, and what with my bad back, I have to have some form of recoil absorber.

I enjoyed stripping it down, changing the firing pin, cleaning it and putting it back together but it still misfired. Tried new brass but still would light strike...head spacing problem? Probably would have been put right by a knowledgeable 'smith...part ex'd in the end for my Xtrema2...with kickoff.:)
