There are routine stops in place, as an example we were pulled over coming off M1/J13 a few years ago for a VOSA spot check, they were stopping all sorts of cars at the time, all very amicable and after a check of the lights and so on we were allowed to carry on, personally I am all for such checks if they weed dangerous vehicles/drivers out.

What I mean is you have been stopped for a legitimate but unconnected reason and the police officer suddenly spots some rifles bagged up across the rear seat and ask why you are carrying them (Lets assume they will not fit in the boot of the car and are not concealed) How would you react? Consider this conversation:

You "Here is my FAC and club membership card, I am travelling to/from where ever"
Police "No worried, can I have a look at the firearms to confirm they are safe and as listed on your FAC, and while I am here lets look at your ammunition"

How would you/others react?

No problem...expect it to be honest...so long as I have my certs with me.

Ovenpaa as far as I know my licencing department have no knowledge of the type of car I own/drive.
I have never been asked to supply that information.
If stopped for a routine check as long as I had my FAC with me I would not be un dully worried.

Approaching the Erskine Bridge in the right hand lane as the left one was closed, doing about 45 MPH, there was the usual bunch of cars behind me including a Police Traffic Car, as soon as it was clear I moved to the inside lane and the cars, including the Police shot by, it's a 70 MPH limit.

The Police then moved over in front of me and stopped, no blue light, I presumed it was reading my number plate, it had that big device on the roof. I overtook it, it then followed me and blue lighted me on the off ramp. I stopped and a wee lassie came out and mentioned that I was going a bit slow doing 42 MPH in a 70 limit, she said speeding cars may hit me. I pointed out that the road was wet, I was carrying a Firearm,(I had a sleeved Marlin on the back seat) and there was no minimum speed limit, and If a speeding car hit me it would be their fault.

I think I was just holding her up from her shift change but I wonder if she had done a PNC check and had noted a Firearm marker.

Anyhoo.....I asked if she had ever shot a gun, she said "No!" So I invited her to come along to the Range for a shot. She just smiled and told me to move on.

I thought the system did add a firearms marker but I am not sure where I heard that.

See a vehicle and for whatever reason, run a quick PNC check for reports of lost/stolen, insurance, MOT and VEL, then again if the officer feels the need, may also do a PNC on the registered keeper to ensure not wanted or disqualified and on the person check a firearms marker would come back. Nothing sinister, nothing untoward, not targetting, just proactive policing......

That seems very reasonable to me and I am always pleased to hear such checks take place.

Back to my question...... (There is of course a reason) I/we shoot some oddballs, as an example Christels ammunition is head stamped 6.5x47 Lapua yet that is not shown on her FAC, I have 300SAUM and again not listed on my FAC which could prove interesting if it was spotted but very easily resolved with someone who knows. So would you try and explain the situation or ask that an officer with firearms background be involved.

For the record this is purely hypothetical and having dragged many thousands of rounds through UK and foreign customs in the past I must say I have never had an issue.

(Well OK apart from the time customs didn’t want me to take a rifle out of the country, and when that happened the police just shrugged and pointed out I was leaving the country so it was not their problem)

I am not sure the normal every day plod would know the difference between calibers of bullits I might be wrong. :roll:
