It is specifically a Martini-Henry Cavalry Carbine. Note the short rear sight ladder. Only sighted to 1,000 yards instead of the 1,300 yards for the rifle........some hope of hitting anything beyond 500 yards though !!!!
The carbine cartridge had a reduced charge of 70 grains of black powder, down from 83 and a bullet of 380 grains instead of 480 grains. With the reduced weight the original cartridge for the rifle made the carbine almost unusable due to the recoil, hence the reduced carbine load. Still kicks a bit but is surprisingly effective at short ranges.
