Carl Gustav 96 Swede.

Went to Traverse City today for a nosy around and spotted a Carl Gustav barrelled action in one of the pawn shops. Barrel is in really good nick and it has a leupold mounts and rings on top and a Timney trigger. Bolt handle has been professionally turned down and the rifle is all matching numbers. While I was looking at it the lady that owns the shop comes over and asks if I'm interest in it, I said I might be but it depends on the price. She wanted $160 for it, well after a wee bit of a haggle and me pointing out a few things (all made up) I paid $120 thank you very much.

It's a very nice rifle so I reckon I am going to have a stock made for it, there is a place in California that makes them to order for $160. Below are pics of the Swede and the stock I will have made for it.

Looks to be in very good all-round condition and certainly a bargain, I look forward to the pictures of the stock and finished rifle.

Any update on the Enfield (if I remember correctly?) you found?

Yes the photos were good - just couldn't remember whether you were keeping it scoped or were putting some peep sights on...

Dougan, I took the scope off and put the peep sights back on the rifle. My eyesight isn't what it used to be but with my glasses on I can make the rounds go where I want them to go. It's much more fun shooting with the peep sight.

Well the custom stock arrived last Thursday and got sent back on Friday. To say I was disappointed would be an understatement, the stock looks like it had been shaped with a knife and fork FFS. The finish was very rough and there were chisel dings in the wood that no amount of sanding would have fixed, there was no way I was accepting it.

So as I said a while back while I was waiting for the stock to be made which took 13 weeks I went ahead and boought an unfinished stock from Boyds gunstocks for $70. With a few minor adjustments and a bit of inletting to completely free float the barrel I got it to fit the Swede nicely. I didn't finish the wood because as I said it was meant to temporary, but now that the custom stock has been sent back I decided last Friday to go ahead and finish the wood using Birchwood Casey wood oil and I have to say I am very pleased with the results.

While I was doing that stock I decided to remove the stock from a Yugo M48 Mauser that I have and fix up the wood on that which was looking a bid tired and bashed up. I finished that last night and it is all nice and dry this morning and again I have to say I am very pleased with it as it really brings out the grain of the wood.

So despite being disappointed with the new custom stock I suppose things worked out well in the end.

How much work did you have to do to get the unfinished stock to fit? I'm interested in getting one for my 257 and just wondering if it's worth paying the $30 difference between a finished and unfinished stock.
