How to put a .22 air rifle moderator into a FAC

#1 Post by FGarre »

Dear all,

I would really appreciate your advise here:
I have an authority for a .22 moderator on my FAC.
I have a friend who has a .22 air rifle with a moderator, a WildCat Whisper .22, and he says that moderator would be perfect on my new .22 Sako P94S and that he will sell it to me at a symbolic price because he is not using the air rifle.

The question is how to do it? I have to inform the police but what about the "sellers" information? In theory I do not need it because that .22 moderator is not a firearm yet, it is on a normal .22 air rifle. The moderator will become a "firearm" once I try to use it on a .22RF Rifle, am I right?

How can I do it respecting the law and without causing any trouble to my friend?

Thanks a lot!

IIRC the moderator will have to be proofed for .22"RF, if it hasn't already been done. Therefore best option might be to give it to an RFD to get the proof done, and the RFD can then put it onto your FAC. You could probably proof and insert it onto your FAC directly - probaby a letter to your firearms department to explain would suffice. The RFD route would be hassle-free.

I recently did the same, I had a moderator off a mate which he had been using on his air rifle.
I simply informed the police the details of the Mod. Name, serial number if any,of which the was no serial number on mine,
and from where I had it.The practise of putting an airgun Mod on a rimfire is a common event,.But to put on a larger centre-fire rifle is totally different, then serial number, make and where purchased from (exactly as you would a rifle)

Hi,
thanks for the replies.

"Col" -> When you say "...and from where I had it..." you mean the details of your friend, right? just name and address and no FAC info needed because that person might not have a FAC, he/she just has an air rifle.

To "proof" a moderator is something around £14 I think I have read somewhere?

Thanks,
saddler

Why are people now thinking that moderators need to be proofed?

None of mine are...never have been

It's more BS foisted on us as a cash cow by the proof houses, same as the BS that threaded or shortened barrels require re-proofing.
