PSG is a different matter due to the sheer weight of the ammo you have to carry, often between stages needing a study bag. I use a 65l rucksack as it is well padded and has an internal frame to help with the weight. Its usually 70% empty though!

I used to have this problem, so I embarked on a bit of a simplification/standardisation programme and now have a sensible setup. I also have a bit of a clearout every season. I carry the following to the point...MartinS wrote:I've found my kit bag get increasingly bigger.![]()
I do like to take everything with me to the firing point because the times I haven't, I've forgot something then find myself running back to the car parked at 600yds at Bisley!
I take the lot in a huge bag with rifle over my shoulder. I take waterproofs, shooting jacket, scope, warmer jacket, mat, rear rest bag, ammo, bipod, oh God the list goes on and on!
I know what yer going to say but I hate leaving gear behind so I think a large rucksack is much needed instead of doing a wonky walk to the firing point.![]()
What do you take and how large is it getting? I did find a surplus 65l for £27!!! I wonder if that what do!

- Rifle with bolt and sights in a padded rifle bag, carried in one hand with my shooting mat looped underneath it (also an umbrella if the weather's bad)
- Jacket and sling carried draped over my shoulders
- One smallish kitbag with an el-cheapo three-legged foldup fishing stool
As well as the simpification I don't change the kit I shoot in with the weather, so if it's raining I get a bit wet and try to run a system of one set of wet kit for outdoors and another set of dry kit for in the caravan. I went down this route after going through half a dozen changes of clothes in a single day during the Imperial a couple of years ago.
Contents of bags listed below. These don't really change and tend to be set out in a standard way so I know where to find everything.
Rifle Bag:
- Rifle, sights, bolt, bolt flag, folding bipod
- Cleaning rod, jag and rod guide
- A set of allen keys
Kit Bag:
- Scope & stand
- Glove
- Shooting jersey
- Head band
- Hat
- Electronic ear defenders (used for coaching, plotting etc...)
- Custom moulded ear plugs (used for shooting)
- Couple of pairs of spare foam earplugs
- 4 x beer towels
- A5 weather writer plus a few propelling pencils and a couple of pens
- Hand extractor (a bent piece of 5mm mild steel rod with a brass handle at one end and a filed extractor slot at the other)
- 2 x small screwdrivers
- Plastic wallet with scorecards
- Plastic 20 round ammo box
- Snapcap
- Glasses
- Ammunition (if not issued at the point)
- Register cards
Cheers,
Gaz
PS - I fully recognise that having committed this to an online forum I will most likely forget something terribly important from this list publicly, humiliatingly and at the worst possible time.
