STANTA

#1 Post by ovenpaa »

I have not shot at STANTA before so can anyone tell me any restrictions in place for civvy shooting? Is it restricted by HME and/or calibre or does anything go within reason? I was thinking specifically about .338 Lap Mag and .50BMG

Used to be restrictions on .50BMG only when air traffic control said so due to overhead traffic to Lakenheath. Tracer at the discretion of the warden having consideration for the dryness of the heathland (so no issues there currently).

I haven't been for a few years now: some of the shorter ranges were most fun with open sights and .22LR. I don't think there's a lot of skill in just belting ETR targetry at sub-600 yards with a scoped fullbore.

Dave,

The range civilians used for 50 cal at Stanta was Robins Lodge, but we haven't been able to shoot 50 cal there for about six years. The approach for aircraft landing at one of Lakenheath's runways is in the 50 cal, and anything above 7000j, trace.

The military, when shooting large calibre weapons at Stanta, arrange for air traffic control to vector incoming flights to Lakenheath around the trace. Civilian clubs used to be able to get the same offering, but for the last six years or so the answer is always no. As a result I sold my 50cal, as I couldn't face travelling to Lydd or Sennybridge.

338 Lapua falls below the 7000j limit on Robins Lodge, with 250 grainers. 300 grain bullets may well push you above. I have shot 338 there, but Landmarc has consistently failed to put out the long range radio controlled targets for ages. This means the furthest targetry is set back at only about 500 yards.

The other Stanta ranges are restricted by calibre. You cannot use 338 Lapua on either Archers or Great Carr. Someone from a club other than the Grove was found to be using a 338 on Great Carr. He was invited to pack up his kit by the range warden.

Pretty much what has already been said. Plus don't forget your SCC (Shooter Certification Certificate) without it you don't shoot, also no under 18's allowed on the ranges.

So I can scratch shooting something heavy but I am OK with tracer if it is not too dry? Really, I am just looking for an excuse to to go, especially as Ceri has done such a fine job on the bookings front.

Range limits for Archers and Great Carr are 4500 jules.
Kings Lynn St Michaels are shooting on Great Carr range this coming Wednesday 16th Jan.
(Weather permitting!)
Permission to use tracer is given on the day.

Ukrifleman, who is the host club on the day? I ask as I see Grove have it booked on the 16th as well and I seem to remember green fees were quite different for some clubs in the area.

Kings Lynn are the host club on Wednesday, but they generally mix and match with the Grove; it all depends who makes the booking, there will probably be Grove members there as well.
Range fees are £12-00

Thanks for confirming that, I will not be going this month as I need to get a lot of jobs finished plus some ammunition loaded for Barton Road on Saturday however I really must get over at some point, if only to use up some of the 7,62x51 milsurp here.
