FAC slot, is .444 a .44 ?

#1 Post by snidey577 »

I am fairly new to my FAC so need to ask a few dumb questions.

I have a slot for a .44 Rifle.

I was intending on a .44-Mag underlever for 25-yard casual fun shooting, but I have seen a .444 Marlin Rifle I like.

Does my slot cover that calibre (.444 Marlin uses .429 bullets)

If so, can the .444 Marlin be loaded-down for indoor gallery shooting velocity/energy levels at 25 yards?

Technically a .444 is just another .44 CALIBER - and Form 101 is all about CALIBER, NOT chamberings

The problems are though, that:
1. The RFD will not sell you a .444 unless it is named as that on your FAC
2. The Firearms Dept may not be happy (are they ever) IF you add a 444 on a 44 slot
and
3. SOME ranges do NOT allow down-loaded gallery rifles to be used. You'll need to check your range conditions/safety certificate

Other than that...the .444 have a real cult following in parts of the world where they are a common hunting rifle.

Hope it works out for you

As Saddler indicated it really depends on your licensing dept and the RFD you buy from. I had a slot for a .45 calibre rifle, ostensibly to do a 45 ACP conversion. When that project died, I bought a rifle in 45/70 with no questions asked from licensing or the RFD.

Thanks.

My range does allow reduced 44 Mag home-loads. Reckon the .444 can still be accurate down there?

Spooky I have just in the last couple of weeks put in a variation for a .444 but realised they are a bit thin on the ground, I only really wanted one to have something a bit different and interesting, as moose are a bit scarce around the Medway towns (toffee wrapper may disagree). Anyway I ended up changing it mid-variation to a .44 and have found a cracker.
well done and good luck if you have found one (they also burn over 50gr of powder a bang ouch)

I've seen plenty of Moose come out of Aaron Stones and Amadeus at two in the morning...... Not sure if it's legal to shoot them though....
In 1978 I was told by my grand dad that the secret to rifle accuracy is, a quality bullet, fired down a quality barrel..... How has that changed?

No greenshoots unfortunately downloaded ammo isn't allowed to be used in gallery rifle competitions shot under the NRA rules.
