first on my list,
By the time it is replaced will it possibly be the shortest service life of the shortest british rifle.

No it wasn't. The first weapon to use the system being lauded as the panecea predates the SA80 by some 20 years.....!
In 1978 I was told by my grand dad that the secret to rifle accuracy is, a quality bullet, fired down a quality barrel..... How has that changed?

'Windage & Elevation Miss. Langdon - Windage & Elevation!'

Yep, Armalite AR18...
The G3 was a roller locking delayed blowback.

NO

Look up "Rifle, No.9 Mk.1"
THE best British Army rifle of the 20th Century - sacrificed by UK politicians as the US was not in favour of the proposed caliber change....then did exactly that within a decade!!

My mistake, never spotted the "general issue" part of "By the time it is replaced will it possibly be the shortest service life of the shortest british rifle"toffe wrapper wrote:Saddler

Re: The Best Service rifles ever (argument starter)
Got to through in my own thoughts here!
Just do some of the older ones...
Lee Enfield No. 4 - Superbly designed and built, very accurate, heavy hitter and that all important 10 rd magazine
K98 - The bolt design is possibly the most widely used one, very accurate as well
K31 - Ahead of its time in my opinion. Straight pull allowed for incredibly rapid rate of fire. Design was ingenious too. If you ever have a look at one it has a similar mechanism to modern day semi-auto/auto rifles with the revolving bolt.
AK-47 - What other rifle can you throw in the river, pick it up and let loose?
