Does anyone know of a good reference site where I can try to identify a 105 mm, presumably British, artillery shell? I gained one a good few years ago and have never really got round to figuring out what it is. I tripped over it when cleaning out the workshop and thought it was about time I knew something about it. Had a look on the web and the projectile looks a bit like a HESH? but with subtle differences. I will try and get a couple of photos/more info up tonight, as I know .
Do these things have any collectors value as I have toyed with the idea of passing it on as space is a bit of a premium and it is just gathering dust. It has intact compression rings and is painted black with a screw on fuse cap (nothing underneath!) and pretty heavy.
Thanks.
Well its a 105mm tank round (not artillery) the P105 would indicate a practice projectile it should actually be blue and im sure it has been repainted (scratch a bit off), as black is the colour code for anti armour it would also have a yellow band around the ogive, you are correct about the HESH its just a practice one the ali bit at the back is an inert base fuse, it is also as you say unfired as the driving bands are unmarked.
It seems to be British I think for the chieftain main gun although ill stand corrected

It could be a factory demo then, but the main thing is that the P indicates that is is inert.
A nice piece, if I still collected ordnance probably worth about £75
