What is the most fun thing you ever shot?

#1 Post by John25 »

For me, it was a twin bofors. Dark night, middle of the Indian Ocean, sea like glass, right barrel green tracer, left barrel red tracer, expending hundreds of 'past sell by date' rounds which skipped off the surface for ages away into the distance in random directions.

:shakeshout:

Happy days.

The 84mm Carl Gustav AKA 'Charlie Gutsache' would be my number 1, :shakeshout: closely followed by the M79 grenade launcher or 'Wombat Gun.' :good:

A Wobat!! Top choice! Still can't beat the phrase, "She banged like a belt fed Wombat"!

Most fun? Difficult, but the one that always springs to mind was the HK53.
In 1978 I was told by my grand dad that the secret to rifle accuracy is, a quality bullet, fired down a quality barrel..... How has that changed?

It would have to be.

10,000 rounds (old stock) through three GPMG on SF inc tracer with spare barrels at the ready + 30 2" motar smoke shells, could not see the range for hours.

RARDEN cannon in a Fox armoured car. Bounced rounds off the barrel of a tank target at Warcop; 1450 yards. Always wanted to see what Armour Piercing Secondary Effect ammo would have done to a BMP; especially the back door fuel tanks.

Working up in size ...

Twin 4.5"
SeaCat
Various torpedo

And great fun launching empty sonobouys towards Russian trawlers ... fill with absorbent material that let them float for 5-10 minutes before sinking. Watching the boat crews scrambling to try and retrieve them was wonderful.

Never quite saw eye-to-eye with the Charlie G, got a faceful of sh*t and a strange pressure-related 'kick in the nuts' on the one occasion they let me loose with the real deal instead of the training round. Yeah, I know - wimp...
My own 'most fun thing' was anti-aircraft training somewhere on Salisbury Plain with the GPMG, the target was a radio-controlled plane. We shot at it, they landed it, patched it up and sent it up again. Until I put one through the engine block that is, strangely the bloke didn't seem as amused as I did...
