How much would you pay for bespoke rings?

#1 Post by Dangermouse »

I was just wondering if there is a market for parts that are guaranteed to be true.
Two items come to mind when thinking about this, scope rings and scope rails.
Both of which I have seen some pretty shoddy quality control with and in both cases I have had samples that could not do the job they were designed for.
In my limited experience, the off the shelf cost of parts is not necessarily any guarantee as to how good the final product is.

Few of us can afford to spend money on kit that may or may not perform as expected, would you be prepared to pay extra for a bespoke item knowing that you are only going to have to pay once and that it will last a long time?

Yes, without a doubt - I am currently looking at a set of Ivy rings for my next project - they are adjustable from 0-150 MOA in 1 MOA steps, but are in the US (like a lot of stuff) - I would be more than willing to consider a UK made alternative if such a thing were to become available!! - the Ivy rings are $525 - so...................Not cheap.

DM - you can get Accushot Chinese rings to fit the Picatinny rail for about £15 off Ebay or, you can buy Third Eye Tactical rings for about £90. They also do the rails.

Buy the best and cry once! But that applies to most things in life........

probably not the best to answer this one as i've only just successfully make some at work using the CAM mill. Hopefully i'll never need to buy any again; just modify my CAD files.
However i tested 3rd eye rings against most decent sets and generally found them superior. Another great set are IOR Valdata own brands.

A lot of the "shops" sell Craig's stuff - he made me a custom rail for my Tikka - I had it in my hand in 3 days.

Third Eye always remind me a bit of Spuhr rings.

I have to order a set of the Spuhr for a customer so I really should get a set of Third Eye at the same time and see how they compare. The bottom line is the Third Eye are UK produced and are going to be a third of the price however it will be interesting to see what you get for the extra outlay.

I certainly believe there is room in the market for something slightly different...

Mike,

That's useful - we have a new member with a Tikka and he needs a tapered rail to get out to 1000 yards and has tried everywhere without success. Was your rail a one-off? Did it have a built-in taper? Did it fit the existing dovetail or screw on top?

Thanks

Vince 20 moa - Goes out to 1200 no problems. Screwed straight on - pop out the plastic stops on the receiver and away to go, no screws supplied. He is now holding them as stock. About £50.
