Deer Stalking… reliable word of mouth recommendation from someone you know has undertaken such stalking being offered by a specific syndicate is best. Like other walks of life, stalking has its scammers. E.G., make sure there is deer, of the species sought, on the land being made available; that appropriate insurance is in place; that there is recourse for recompense if it all goes wrong. In addition, obtain and understand terms and conditions; consider the implications of allowing a syndicate leader to be a FAC mentor; make sure ‘coaches’ are suitably qualified; consider the quality of deer management, the construction & execution of a shooting plan and safety; determine if the land is over-shot.
If in doubt, contact BASC or similar.

Re: DSC Level 1
From my own experience I'd say that the examiners want you to pass rather than fail. Most of the multiple choice questions can be deal with by logic and elimination: what's the "silly" answer, what's the "well, it might be" and what's the "safe situation" answer?
Having helped a local BDS group to run a rifle range, I also have to say that I see guys who appear to have taken up the notion of "I fancy deer stalking", have gone out and got themselves a FAC, spent a tidy sum on all the gear but have completely no idea. In reality it is precisely for these guys that we run training events.

I agree it is a case of read the questions & answers and avoid the obvious stupid answers. It does help to learn the material and spend time with a someone knowledgeable and experienced who you can learn with. I have been a member of my Rifle range now for 6mth and will be going out with the guy who I am learning from. We have both agreed that I will only go out stalking when we both feel I am ready (vague as it sounds), I have joined the ranges hunting club and will be out under supervision. As someone who would class himself as a total novice even after passing the Level 1 I think learning to do it the right way is a must imho.tikkathreebarrels wrote:From my own experience I'd say that the examiners want you to pass rather than fail. Re: DSC Level 1
Ray, your attitude is spot on imho. I'd even suggest accompanying your mentor when he goes stalking. Leave your rifle at home, stand beside him when he lines up on a deer and see how easily your heart rate jumps up! Also you have to come to terms with having just killed a large animal (dont be surprised if you have mixed feelings) and dealing with the carcass.
Re: DSC Level 1
That's a great idea. I will talk to him about it. I have no doubt that my heart will be hammering out of my chest. I agree I will have mixed feelings afterwards but I think I would be very worried if I didn't.tikkathreebarrels wrote:Ray, your attitude is spot on imho. You raise your stalking stick like a rifle and watch it dance around. :shakeshout: Goods time to practice controlling your breathing and squeezing the imaginary trigger when things have settled down.raybrown53 wrote:That's a great idea. Oh yes, if you're on a muntjac and it thinks there's someone there you have 2 seconds max before you're looking at an empty space again

Re: DSC Level 1
Well done Ray. I keep wanting to sit the Danish equivalent however I am always going to struggle with the written side of things.

Would the Danish authorities not provide you with a translated version of the written test?
Re: DSC Level 1
Sadly not and the Danish hunters licence (Jagt tegn) covers more than just Deer, in fact when I was looking at the quick reference sheet I did not even recognise all of the animals!
Re: DSC Level 1
Mythical Norse Beasts? :lol:ovenpaa wrote:Sadly not and the Danish hunters licence (Jagt tegn) covers more than just Deer, in fact when I was looking at the quick reference sheet I did not even recognise all of the animals!
Re: DSC Level 1
Hehe, things like the Morhund which they would much prefer if it was mythical plus some more typically European animals plus larger Deer I did not recognise.
