Gun Cabinet Dehumidifiers

#1 Post by judders »

Hello all,

My cabinet/safe isn't in the main house and I'm concerned about the humidity and potential for corrosion.

Right now, I have my rifles in plastic bags that are supposed to prevent the humidity getting to them and I've a number of other dehumidifying items (silica bags, electronic rechargeable dehumidifier), but I'm thinking about something a bit more permanent and a system that I trust more. Plus, getting the rifles in/out of the bags is a total pain the in the backside.

Does anyone have any experience of the electric rod type systems, like this one: http://www.midwayuk.com/epages/Midway_U ... cts/359695

I'm open to other anti-corrosion suggestions too, but unfortunately moving the cabinet isn't viable. Apparently, getting rid of the Mrs wardrobe to put my gun cabinet in the bedroom isn't allowed.

Cheers,

Jud

Looks suspiciously like a low-wattage heater to me.

You can probably buy something: (Though at 45W the running costs will be higher - but you could always stick it on a time switch.)

Looks like a fish tank heater to me, how about a 40 watt lightbulb

It is basically a heater. This rod type of dehumidifier (heater!) seems to get great review from the guys in the US, where lots of them have to contend with much higher humidity than here. Just wanted to see if anyone had something similar here though.

45W Room heater & 40W Light bulb - these rods are 12w, so although it's not cheap to buy, over the years I think it'll pay for itself versus a regular bulb/heater. To be honest, 50 quid to prevent a few grands worth of kit rusting doesn't seem OTT to me.

Bags of silica gel aren't expensive and seem to last plenty of time, if you get the indicating sort you can stick them into the oven when they change colour. Once dried out they can be reused.

Would save having to run cables into the cabinet.

Or the prepackaged, but not cheap, form http://www.cotswoldoutdoor.com/index.cf ... colour/124
Careful now/that sort of thing

Judders, how does one run the cable from the inside of the safe to the wall socket? I would think there will be drilling involved.

Judders, there is drilling involved but no need for a huge hole. These do work as I have had them in my gun safes for a couple of years now. No problem with humidity or corrosion, if you're prepared to drill a small hole just big enough for the cable to go through, a wee bit of wire splicing and reconnecting, these are definitely worth it. As for the drilled hole, just plug it to keep the outside air out.

Shugie, I already have stacks of silica in there and the digital humidity monitor I have still says that it's hitting 70%+ at times, which is way too high. Need to try something else.

Blu, perfect, just the feedback I was looking for. Thanks :good: I'm OK with drilling a cable-sized hole in the side of the cabinet and it's located near a power outlet anyway. Think I'll give it a go.

Cheers,

Jud

Judders, you won't regret it mate, they do work very well. Just make sure you plug the hole afterwards.
