Muzzle Velocity

Hi Everyone,

I'm very new to this so apologies if this is a silly question.

The rifle club I'm a member of has a range limit of 2150 fps muzzle velocity and 1496 fps muzzle energy. I am hoping to get a .223 straight pull rifle and I need to know if this would exceed these limits.

Is the muzzle velocity based on the weapon or the ammo? If it's the ammo can I buy / make lower powered ammo to fit the various ranges that I would be shooting at?

Dave

5.56 NATO has a muzzle energy of approx 1797J and velocity of around 3000fps so way over your limit, you may be able to download it but the easy way would be to fit a .22 conversion kit for the low power range days.

I believe the. 223 will be moving a bit fast for you @2900fps to well in to the 3000's

You are probably best to speak with the range to see what is the norm,

Would a gallery rifle not be a better solution unless you will get the chance to shoot the .223 elsewhere.

Higuys,

Thanks for the replies, it's what I thought you'd say.

I'm going through a probation course with another club thats rated for upto 4000 fps so will be able to shoot it there; it's just a long distance away from me.

A .223 cast lead boolit would be ideal for your use at 2000fps.
